Background Information - Myanmar

Myanmar is one of UNOPS’ leading offices in Asia, acting as fund manager for three of the largest development programmes in the country, namely the Access to Health fund, the Livelihood and Food Security Fund (LIFT) and the Joint Peace Fund (JPF). In addition, UNOPS is Principal Recipient for the Global Fund in Myanmar and for the Global Fund’s regional artemisinin-resistance initiative targeting drug resistant malaria in the greater Mekong sub-region. UNOPS provides procurement, infrastructure and project management services to a wide range of organizations in the country, including the Government of Myanmar, international development partners, other UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs. UNOPS plays a critical role in ensuring that the quality of services provided to its partners meets stringent requirements of speed, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Fund Management has become a recognized strength of UNOPS Myanmar and a new potential business model for other country offices in the region. UNOPS Myanmar Programme Management Office provides support in grants management, budgeting and reporting, capacity assessment and building of implementing partners and oversight and compliance. UNOPS Myanmar will build on the accumulated knowledge and expertise and establish a Centre of Excellence in Programme Management to assist UNOPS offices elsewhere to expand engagements in programme/fund management in a recognized and consistent way. Programmes - if set up and managed well - can achieve the impact and scale required to make tangible contributions to the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Programmes bring synergies and sustainable, lasting impact. They provide unique platforms for innovative approaches at scale and value for money.

Reporting to the Head of the Programme Management Office, the Programme Management Intern will support the Programme Management Office in the context of project and programme management maturity roadmap and contribute to the standardizing and application of tools, systems and processes. Programme Management Intern will primarily be supporting LIFT, Access to Health and Joint Peace Fund.

Functional Responsibilities

The main functions of the Programme Management Intern include:

  • Assist in learning and coordination activities, as required, in terms of profiling partners/ organizations, organizing forums and events, and documentation. 
  • Assist in documentation and information sharing through ACCESS webpage, social media and newsletter in a regular basis. Conduct media monitoring regularly and contribute in the development of communication materials related with health activities.
  • Support the compilation and qualitative analysis of Most Significant Change stories from the projects shared by implementing partners to the Fund, and producing a success stories publication highlighting good practices and changes.
  • Assist with the compilation, analysis, and writing of Fund/ project reports, correspondents and communication materials including 2019 annual report and 2019 progress report.
  • Assist HSS team in development and utilization of project management tools/ dashboards.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • Candidates must have an undergraduate degree and be either currently enrolled in a Master’s course in Public Health, Development Studies or any related subject, or have graduated within the past three years prior to the application date of the internship.
Work Experience
  • Experience in public health, community development, or a relevant field is desirable.
  • Minimum 1 year, in project management support, grants management, and/or programme management is desirable.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages is required.
  • Prior programme management certification is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision in a complex environment is an asset.

Languages

  • Good communication skills and fluency of Myanmar and English language (oral and written) is required.

Terms and Conditions

The intern is responsible for all costs associated with the internship (e.g. accommodation, health insurance,travel and necessary visa arrangements).

UNOPS Myanmar will provide the intern with the following:

  • Workspace in a shared office including computer, stationery, land line telephone
  • Use of common office facilities, as for all UNOPS staff
  • A small stipend for those not receiving any funding from other institutions
  • A small stipend towards the cost of travel to the duty station If mission travel is undertaken, Daily Subsistence Allowance, in accordance with UN policy
  • Assistance with application for work visa

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.
