UN field personnel are exposed to various health and security hazards that may result in disease, psychological trauma, and injuries. Effective coordination of medical services, including occupational health support, referrals, and medevac processes, enhances health outcomes by facilitating access to appropriate care.

Following a DHMOSH assessment in Cabo Verde, the local UN clinic was recommended for closure, with the suggestion to recruit a UN Medical Analyst to oversee coordination of referrals, medevac facilitation, and occupational health support.

The UN Medical Analyst is responsible for enhancing occupational medical support for UN personnel and their recognized dependents in Cabo Verde as part of the UN's duty of care. 

The incumbent focuses on facilitating access to specialized medical care, coordinating medical evacuations (medevac), and providing occupational health advice while collaborating with Administration. This role excludes direct clinical care.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

 
1) Health Management and Coordination with providers  
 
Referral and Medevac Coordination
  • Act as the primary focal point for all referral and medevac coordination, available 24/7 for emergency questions and support.
  • Facilitate communication among requestors, local medical providers, authorities, UN medical sections, security personnel, and other stakeholders for efficient referrals and medevac processes.
  • Monitor and ensure timely follow-up on all hospitalizations of UN staff and dependents, working with attending physicians and specialists.
  • Maintain regular contact with United Nations Designated Examining Physicians to assist with medevac recommendations and access to specialized care.

Liaison and Relationship Building

  • Build strong working relationships with hospitals, private healthcare facilities, and local physicians to streamline access to high-quality medical care for staff and recognized dependents.
  • Serve as the in-country communications liaison between patients, treating physicians, the requesting organization, and the security team.
  • Support mental health initiatives in coordination with staff counselors as part of the duty station’s occupational health strategy.

Preventive Health and Wellness Support

  • Provide guidance on travel health, including facilitating access to vaccinations, prophylactic medications, and travel medical kits for staff on official travel.
  • Organize health education programs emphasizing preventive health measures and occupational health best practices.

2) Administrative Coordination

Health Protocol and Reporting
  • Liaise with UN Headquarters to maintain the list of examining physicians and ensure compliance with UN medical protocols and recommendations.
  • Ensure prompt communication between treating physicians and UN Medical Services for comprehensive case management and timely reporting.
  • Visit hospitalized staff to provide consultation support and facilitate referrals to specialized care when necessary.

  • Organize briefings and disseminate health-related information to staff on available services, health policies, and updates.
  • Establish strong relations with medical service providers, including hospitals, private facilities, and support services for reliable referral options.

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Implementation of proactive occupational health policies and best practices and procedures in the medical services in conjunction with administration.

Required Skills and Experience

 Education:
  • Doctorate (MD) or equivalent in medicine, including residency/internship in one of the medical specialties with sub-specialization in General Practice/Family /Occupational Health 
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible clinical experience. 
  • 2 years of experience in Occupational Health 
  • A valid license to practice.
  • UN or other specialized agency field experience is desirable. 
  • Experience in health care or coordination of medical teams is essential.

Language:  

  • Fluency in Portuguese is required. 
  • UN language English or French proficiency is required.
