UNDSS Ethiopia operates Security Operation Centers (SOC) throughout Ethiopia and provides 24/7 communication coverage and support to all UNSMS personnel in Ethiopia. The overall mandate of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is to provide leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the Programmes and activities of the United Nations System.
The communication system in UNDSS Ethiopia is comprised of a total of thirteen (13) Security Operation Centers (SOC) which operate in each security area, providing communication to UN Agencies, Funds, and Programs (AFPs).
Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Chief Security Adviser, the Radio Operator shall provide operations of the UNDSS communication system.
S/he will work in close collaboration with the FSCO and/or FSA and UN staff, UNDP Ethiopia Country Office and UNDP HQ, government and development partners as required to facilitate information exchange and ensure effective service delivery. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
- Transmits and receives messages through VHF and HF radio, telephone, fax, satellite, arranges radio conferences, selecting the most efficient and economic means for the transmission, taking into consideration the nature and priority of communications to be transmitted. Upon receipt of notifications of security and/or safety incidents, radio operators inform the respective organization so that the appropriate support can be provided.
- Conducts radio checks with UN staff members and wardens and maintains a station log where all occurrences related to the operation of the UN System Communication Centre are entered. Information about every movement of UN staff members and UN vehicles in the field is also entered in the log.
- Transmits security information to update UN staff in the field on the development of the current security/emergency situation in the areas where they operate.
- Monitors the usage of the communication system to ensure that it is being utilized in accordance with established SOPs; guides personnel on appropriate behavior when using the communication system and verifies the operational status of the communication system.
- Conducts personnel headcount in accordance with instructions from the Designated Official, Area Security Coordinator, or Senior Security personnel, in accordance with established SOPs.
- Conduct liaison with other UN inter-agency SOCs in the region and maintain contact information databases such as call signs, sell calls, email, and telephone numbers.
- Perform other related duties as required by SOC supervisors, FSAs, FSCOs, or other Senior Security Personnel.

- Secondary education
- 3 Years experience in radio communications i.e. vhf/hf/uhf
- Knowledge of computer applications (MS Office & internet)
Language:
- Fluency in English and Amharic with effective written and oral communication skills
