Organizational Setting

FAO’s commitment to environmental sustainability is integral to our strategic objectives and operations.

The Governing Bodies Servicing Division (CSG) provides support to the Secretariat of the Conference and the Council and to all Governing and Statutory Bodies of FAO. It houses the Multilingualism expertise of the Organization, delivering corporate language goods and services. CSG also provides Protocol and Meetings services to the Organization and sustains liaison and communication with Members.

The post is located at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, in the Russian Translation Group of the Language Services branch (CSGL), which enables the Organization's multilingualism by providing interpretation, translation and terminology goods and services for all FAO languages across the span of corporate governance, normative, operational and communication functions. CSGL also supports the provision of FAO products in local languages and is responsible for quality language assurance within the Organization.

Reporting Lines

The Translator/Reviser (Russian) reports to the Senior Reviser, CSG.

Technical Focus

Timely translation or revision of meeting documents, publications, correspondence and other materials into Russian from English and one of the other languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French or Spanish), and occasionally from Russian into English.

Key Results

Translation/revision of FAO official documents for meetings and certain important publications to be carried out according to the highest quality standards.

Key Functions

  • Translates/revises in the target language translations prepared by other staff or by external translators, ensuring consistency of terminology and style throughout the text.
  • Produces versions in the target language which are equivalent to the original text in terms of accuracy, completeness, meaning, style and effectiveness.
  • Conducts research, proposes additional terms for the established standards of terminology and glossaries.
  • Consults with substantive units regarding possible inconsistencies or errors in the original text.
  • Collects and verifies terminology and references and contributes to the linguistic research of the Branch, to the building and enhancement of terminology databases and to the selection of useful reference documents.

Specific Functions

  • Translates documents from English or one of the other languages of the Organization into Russian.
  • Makes difficult decisions on terms relating to subject areas where vocabulary and semantic usage are still evolving.
  • Contributes to the selection of external translators with the necessary skills for inclusion in the FAO roster of freelance translators.
  • Promotes the adoption of new technology and the use of computer-assisted translation tools.
  • Acts as team leader when required and replaces the supervisor during her/his absence or during shifts.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in linguistic studies or translation, or in law, economics, agriculture or another FAO field of activity with a specialization in languages and/or diploma from an internationally recognized interpreter/translator school.
  • Five years of relevant experience in translation/revision work.
  • Working knowledge (full proficiency – level C) of Russian, English and of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in translation/revision work.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately revise/translate highly specialized technical subjects and to analyse problems and detect flaws in revision/translation.
  • Demonstrated clarity of expression and rapidity of composition, breadth of vocabulary and clear sense of semantics, syntax and stylistics.
  • Extent of knowledge of technical terminology relating to one or more fields or subject matters of the Organization.
  • Extent of knowledge and use of computer-assisted translation tools.
  • Knowledge of the organizational structure.
  • Familiarity and experience with processes relating to translation and linguistics.
