Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The main documents outlining the mandate of the organization are the Vancouver Declaration on Human Settlements, the Habitat Agenda, the Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements, the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements in the New Millennium, and UN General Assembly Resolution A/56/206. Planning, finance and Economy Section (PFES) The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of the UN-Habitat, that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to MCOs/CO, government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. It also ensures that the cross-cutting area of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels. The consultant will support the Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI). The YGI is a project focusing on young people’s urban health and wellbeing through their engagement in digital technologies in Senegal, India and Colombia. Supervision The Consultant will be under the overall leadership of the Leader, Planning, Finance and Economy Section and report to the Manager of the Young Gamechangers Initiative Specific Responsibilities • Facilitate training of trainings and community participation workshops using digital tools including Minecraft • Produce high-quality Minecraft models for community workshops • Train UN-Habitat staff, implementing partners, community groups and target community members on the use of digital engagement tools • Produce information and communications materials, including images and videos from each workshop • Prepare a final report of each participatory design workshop • Provide gamification and digital engagement inputs to ongoing planning initiatives • Develop critical analysis of existing planning documents and instruments. • Develop clear digital proposals, drawings and related reports for partner cities. • Provide inputs to guides, policy briefs and normative outputs • Provide inputs into PFES publications and documents
Qualifications/special skills
Education A first-level university degree in information technology, gaming and animation technology, games programming, game design and development, multimedia design or related field is required. Experience At least two years of work experience in using digital engagement tools including Minecraft, including the production of models server administration and community management or related fields is required Experience of producing advocacy and communications materials and facilitating workshops or teaching is an added advatange.
Languages
Fluent written and spoken English is a requirement and any UN language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic is desirable.
