Mission and objectives

Three years ago, Member States adopted bold reforms to the United Nations development system. At the heart of those reforms was a commitment to transform the United Nations development coordination function to unleash the system’s full capacity to support countries on their path to achieving the transformational 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN Resident Coordination Offices were retooled, under the oversight of the UN Development Coordination Office, as a means to streamline coordination, manage UN Country Teams and deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. These frameworks are the primary data source for the UNSDG's contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Context

The UN Development Coordination Office (DCO) is the secretariat to the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) and manages the Resident Coordinator (RC) system. Resident Coordinators (RCs) are the highest-ranking representatives of the United Nations development system (UNDS) at the country level, designated by and reporting to the UN Secretary-General. RCs have the responsibility to lead United Nations Country Teams (UNCTs), ensure system-wide accountability on the ground for the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and coordinate UN support to countries in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
