Overview of position

Need Statement:

The Ministry of Energy and Water's Groundwater Resources Department in Afghanistan is actively engaged in comprehensive investigations and permanent monitoring of the groundwater resources across the country, encompassing both rural and urbanized areas. 

The department is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Hydrogeologist Specialist to contribute to hydrogeological investigations and analysis projects. The Senior Hydrogeologist Specialist will play a crucial role in interpreting technical data, designing and implementing hydrogeological investigations, and providing valuable insights into groundwater flow and quality. 

Objective: 

To conduct comprehensive investigations and permanent monitoring of the groundwater resources across the country, encompassing both rural and urbanized areas.

1. Relevant government ministries at national and sub-national levels have increased capacity and commitment to manage equitable and sustainable WASH programmes


Role objectives
•Hydrogeological investigations conducted. 
•Geological models Developed:
•Technical Reports prepared.
•Modelled to forecast future groundwater storages and predict impacts on groundwater flow and quality.
•Numerical groundwater recharge models developed.
•Project Management duties performed.
•Commercial and industrial groundwater assessments conducted.
•Identified and assessed transboundary basin management issues.
•Recommended the best approaches for the design and implementation of a groundwater monitoring system.

Key competencies
Required qualifications and experience:
•Master’s degree (MS) in Hydrogeology, Geology (with a hydrogeology focus), or Geological Engineering, emphasizing fundamental geologic principles and quantitative hydrogeology.
•Minimum of 7 years of related experience, with a preference for those with national project experience.
•Good knowledge and fluency in English.
•3+ years of fieldwork experience.
•Motivation, initiative, and organizational skills to work effectively in a busy multi-disciplinary environment.
•Ability to work under pressure and respond promptly to changing project demands.
•Experience in quantifying groundwater flow, using analytical methods, and groundwater modeling packages.
•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and digital.
•Ability to produce and understand written reports without consistent revision and maintain accurate records of site-based activities.
