UNICEF Nepal Country Office is looking for experts and professional Translators for Nepali, English, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Doteli, Achhami, Tamang, Newari & Awadhi. Applications will be screened to have a pool of experts that will be engaged from time to time as needed. These are nationals of Nepal

How can you make a difference? 

UNICEF Nepal Country Office works in partnership with national and local governments, civil society, mass media and other development partners to advocate for child rights in Nepal. To pursue this intention, the Office develops a range of communication materials including reports, press releases, human interest stories, briefing notes, factsheets, IEC materials, etc. targeted at numerous audiences including government, civil society, business and the media as well as children and young people. These materials need to be translated to various languages including Nepali, English, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Doteli, Achhami, Tamang, Newari and Awadhi for the benefit of the target audiences. For this, UNICEF would like to engage the services of translators. With prior briefing for each assignment, the translators are required to submit their translated work, as per the UNICEF Style Book for English translations. The translators should be available at very short notice in case of emergencies and may be required to work on Saturdays and Sundays, based on the requirements of the assignment.

Specific tasks:

  • Under the guidance of the Communications Section or Programme teams and the direct supervision of subject matter specialists, the translator provides high quality translations of press releases, booklets, human interest stories, reports, papers, subtitles/scripts, and other materials as needed.
  • Ensure that the translated text is technically, linguistically and grammatically correct, error free, and meets high quality standards, without requiring further editing after completion of the translation.
  • Ensure language excellence and proofreading, including excellent vocabulary, syntax, expression and grammar as well as all relevant terminology.
  • Provide accurate and timely translation to the satisfaction of UNICEF standards.
  • Observe confidentially and refrain from divulging any information about the content of the text.

Task:

Translation of the official document and communication materials and submission of the final work in the specified language.

Deliverables:

At the end of each assignment, the consultant will deliver accurately translated document in the requested language.

Duration:

From a pool of experts some consultants will be engaged under contract modality of Long-Term Arrangement for 11.5 months, tentatively starting from 20 December 2022.  This will be an open contract that will allow the consultant to be readily assigned for specific assignments as the need arises.  Completion of each assignment will be evaluated and if satisfactorily delivered,  the consultant will be paid for his/her services

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Minimum Qualifications required:

University (Bachelors) degree in Communications, Journalism, Linguistics, Social Sciences or related field.

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • More than three years of practical professional experience in providing translation services to national and international agencies.
  •  Fluency in English and Nepali for translators seeking to provide translation service from English to Nepali and vice versa.
  •  Fluency in English, Nepali and Maithili/Bhojpuri/Doteli/Achhami/Tamang/Newari/Awadhi for translators seeking to provide translation service in the local languages.
  • Examples of previous work will be relevant for assessment.
  • Excellent communication and working with people.
  • Previous working experience with UNICEF is an advantage.
  • Background/familiarity with emergency situations as well as children’s issues.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
