Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) Sub regional Office for the Pacific (SAP) covers Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. FAO SAP is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing agreed strategies for addressing sub regional agriculture, food, nutrition and rural development priorities. FAO SAP develops and maintains relations with sub region-wide institutions including the Council of Regional Organizations in the Pacific (CROP). The Sub regional Office is a subsidiary of FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in Bangkok.
Requested by the Government of Solomon Islands, FAO SAP developed the project “Strengthening local food systems (impacted by COVID-19) by promoting climate-resilient and sustainable urban and peri-urban agriculture value chains” to develop targeted technical assistance in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, Health and Medical Services, Education and Human Resources Development, Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology; and the Honiara City and Provincial Councils of selected islands.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator for Pacific (SRC), direct supervision of the Lead Technical Officer (LTO), and in collaboration with the Assistant FAO Representative in Solomon Islands, the Agriculture Consultant will be the in country focal point and deliver the following activities:

Technical Focus

• In collaboration with the International consultant for Agriculture and Business, facilitate the design and implementation of training workshops on

i) Climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture and food production systems, soil preparation urban gardening and school gardening.
ii) Mobile Marketing Initiative
iii) Business Management

• In collaboration with the International consultants for Post Management and Nutrition, facilitate the design and implementation of training workshops

i) Post-harvest management food safety
ii) Nutrition to involve school gardening and healthy diets at schools.


Tasks and responsibilities

• For the organization of training workshops, develop budgets, gather quotes, work with the procurement team in Samoa to book venues, and make payments for all of the logistics.

• Once workshops are implemented, reconcile all financial transactions and provide accountability reports based on FAO procedures.
• Ensure that the appropriate community groups in country are selected, informed and invited to all training workshops.

• Liaise with the relevant government ministries (to name; Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources) to promote their active participation in all of the project activities.

• Report on all project activities that will be implemented in country.

• Facilitate the work of the service provider under a Letter of Agreement to deliver the activities outlined in the Agreement.

• Facilitate the travel of international consultants who will come to the country for the implementation of the project activities.

• Maintain very active email communications with the Government appointed National Program Coordinator (NPC), the Assistant FAO Representative, your supervisor and other colleagues involved with the project.

• Draft the project final report and assist with its technical clearance.

• Perform all other duties that will be requested by your supervisor to ensure success of the project.

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in Agriculture, Agri-business, Agricultural Extension or any other relevant field
• 5 years of relevant experience in Agriculture, Agri-business, Agricultural Extension or any other relevant field
• Working knowledge (level C) of English, and limited knowledge (level B) of one of the French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian. For PSA only one language level C is required.
