Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Software Integration Unit, Software Applications Section, International Data Centre Division (IDC).

Reporting Lines

Under the supervision of the Head, Software Integration Unit, to:

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Identify areas of potential improvements to algorithms used for acquisition, processing, analysis and dissemination of data and products and make improvements as required;
  2. Define, coordinate and execute projects to maintain, develop and integrate software into the existing system;
  3. Develop new software and maintain the configuration of the applications software of the IDC and carry out projects to integrate new algorithms developed internally and externally;
  4. Provide guidance and training to team members within the PTS and trainees assigned to the IDC;
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Advanced university degree in computer science, geophysics, nuclear sciences or a related field with emphasis on scientific software management and development.

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years relevant working experience in management and development of software to process large volumes of data, using UNIX operating systems, Python, C/C++ and shell programming languages and relational databases, such as Oracle and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience working with radionuclide data is essential;
  • Experience in software life-cycle methodology and in scientific software development is desirable;
  • Experience in data visualization, data science including ML/AI, and parallel computing, is desirable;
  • Experience with Agile software development methods (preferably Scrum) is desirable;
  • Experience with seismic, hydroacoustic or infrasound data is desirable.

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.

Remuneration:

CTBTO offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission. The salary offered may be subject to deductions to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and Health Insurance Scheme.
