The FCDO funded Syria Education Programme II (SEP-II) will deliver on the UK’s commitment to girls’ education and aims to enhance equitability of education for girls and boys by strengthening the quality and inclusivity of formal primary education in Northwest Syria. SEP-II will aim to directly impact 150,000 girls and boys per year in formal primary education through evidence-based and data-driven education programming and will positively impact the entire primary school-aged population. The project will focus on four key outcomes: (1) Enhancing school level capacity to deliver inclusive, gender responsive and quality learning, (2) Developing effective systems to support inclusion, mental health and child protection, (3) Strengthening local education systems so that they are accountable, effective, and responsive, and (4) Generating more predictable financing for sector implementation, including teacher salaries. 
 
Job Overview/Summary:
The Gender Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) Expert for SEP II will be responsible for mainstreaming gender and inclusion throughout all program activities. The GEDI Expert will particularly ensure that activities and all approaches are sensitive to the specific needs of girls and children with disabilities. This position is contingent on IRC being awarded funding.
 
Major Responsibilities:
Work with other members of the SEP-II Leadership and Output Teams to support the Education Directorates and local education systems/partners, in developing effective systems to support gender and inclusion inside schools in Northwest Syria. 
Work with local partners in strengthening their capacity on gender and inclusion topics, through trainings, adaptation and revision of tools, etc.; 
Work with senior officials in the relevant departments in the Education Directorates, providing leadership, focus and technical advice, particularly in the areas of inclusion and gender. 
Provide coaching and mentoring for supervised staff and partners, to ensure the work of the technical advisors builds capacity and drives delivery. 
Provide quality assurance of all technical outputs in the areas of gender and inclusion. This will involve working closely with the Leadership Team to not only ensure the outputs are drafted and presented well, but also are sound in terms of the advice and solutions they propose.   
Work with other Output Teams to ensure that project activities are well-integrated (particularly from the MEL, systems strengthening, and research and advocacy perspectives).
Help to plan and convene meetings with the different focal points of SEP II, with the goal of facilitating information sharing and exchange of best practice, as a way to actively promote and build a more equal, diverse and inclusive office culture and work environment.
In close collaboration with HR, provide orientation and on-the-job training to SEP II staff on GEDI core concepts. 
Support contextual adaptation, design and roll-out of training tools, resources and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials to support country teams to raise awareness and meet training targets.
Maintain detailed, up-to-date records of all GEDI stakeholders, and attendance at trainings, discussions, forums.
Closely monitor and follow up with teams on regional and country-level GEDI workplans, to identify areas where support is needed, and work closely with teams to develop appropriate action steps
Assist with special regional initiatives, like the GEDI staff analysis, mentorship program, GEDI & IT Open Hours, Policy, and Facility review, with an emphasis on data collection and analysis, content production, training, scheduling, team coordination and support. 
 
Required qualification and skill:
 
Bachelor’s degree in gender and/or women studies, social sciences, law, psychology, history, health, social work, humanities, or other related discipline.
8 years professional experience in one or more of the following areas: gender mainstreaming, social justice research and activism, gender-based violence prevention and response, and protection.
Experience in working on child protection projects is a must.
Background in or extensive understanding of the humanitarian aid sector and familiarity with child protection and feminist principles, and their application within this context.
Exceptional organizational and admin management skills, with a proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple streams of portfolios with attention to detail to identify and address multifaceted business needs.
Proven experience as a facilitator/trainer on GEDI- related topics.
Ability to work independently and deliver on complex, sensitive initiatives in a face paced environment.
Ability to analyze GEDI data, advise on trends for management interventions
Good communication, report writing and presentation skills essential –in English and Arabic 
Knowledge of participatory, child protection and feminist principles.
Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with local and remote team members at multiple levels within the organization.
Computer skills are required – MS Office package and Internet.
Flexible, culturally sensitive, open minded, with a desire to learn and evolve as a practitioner and person.
