Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs working in 40 countries worldwide, is currently looking for a qualified Communications Assistant to be based in Kyiv.

DRC has been operating in Ukraine for more than 10 years with emergency and durable solution interventions for assisting IDPs, returnees, host communities, and conflict-affected populations. With the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022, DRC has shifted its programming to emergency response to meet the urgent needs of conflict-affected population in the country. Current DRC programming is focusing on protection activities, Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), NFI and Food distributions, Shelter & WASH interventions, Economic Recovery, Capacity Building, Humanitarian Demining and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education. The organization has 6 offices in the country.

The overall purpose of the role                                                                                           

The Communication Assistant will work closely with the Communications Manager, Communications Officer and Programme teams to identify appropriate methods to communicate to the relevant audience. The Communications Assistant will contribute to the communications efforts through social media, publications, and media outreach. Applicants are expected to have a background in communications/PR/SMM/journalism or a related field, preferably in an NGO, or a PR agency.                                                 

Main responsibilities                                                                                               

  • Assist in the promotion of the work of DRC through regular updates on social media (Facebook and Twitter), the DRC website / Facebook page and other publications;
  • Support with the writing and publication of the DRC monthly newsletter;
  • Assist in drafting information materials for use in DRC channels and in traditional and online media: press releases, feature stories, news stories, and Programme publications in English, Ukrainian and Russian;
  • Assist with media liaison and coordination, and media monitoring;
  • Contribute to ensuring visibility and branding for the donor-funded projects implemented by DRC in Ukraine;
  • Drafting tasks and briefs for external vendors to produce visibility and communications products (e.g. designers, printing offices, photographers);
  • Support in organizing public events, including international celebrations and whenever organized by field teams as appropriate/requested;
  • Ensure quality and content of all public information documents for DRC activities, in coordination with relevant staff.

Required experience and competencies                             

  • Diploma in social sciences, communications, public relations or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a similar role, in PR/SMM/journalism or similar, preferably in an NGO, or a PR agency.
  • Experience in managing social media accounts, drafting content plans, and community management.
  • Experience in drafting publications for media outlets.
  • Strong writing skills in English, Ukrainian, and Russian.
  • Ability to communicate with different target audiences.
  • Working knowledge of graphic editing software: Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.
  • Strong computer/digital skills.
  • Advanced English proficiency.
  • Fluency in Ukrainian and Russian.

Desirable

  • Experience with direct-mail services (e.g. Mailchimp) will be an advantage.
