ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) enables governments, empowers people, and strengthens institutions to realize justice and promote peace and sustainable development. IDLO is the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law and access to justice.

With its Headquarters in Rome, Italy, a Branch Office in The Hague, and Permanent Observer Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva, IDLO carries out policy advocacy, research and learning, as well as rule of law and justice programmes in countries through some 17 Country Offices operating in every region of the world.   

The IDLO Permanent Observer Mission in New York has representative functions in the UN General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies, builds and maintains diplomatic relations with the United Nations System, other international organizations, bilateral diplomatic missions, civil society and other stakeholders in New York. The IDLO Liaison Office New York nurtures partnerships with UN Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programmes as well as Foundations, NGOs, think tanks, academia and the private sector. The Office plays an advocacy role to champion rule of law and people-centered justice with decision makers in programme and donor countries and other partners.

THE POSITION

The position, Advocacy Analyst, is located in the Permanent Observer Mission New York. Under the direct supervision of the IDLO Permanent Observer, the incumbent will be responsible for providing both substantive and administrative support, with the following duties:

  • Monitor developments related to IDLO’s mandate and Strategic Plan at the UN and other New York based policy forums and contribute to the drafting of reports, memoranda and minutes as requested.
  • Maintain an integrated New York Office calendar, updating it periodically with inputs from UN and non-UN sources, and disseminating relevant information to colleagues.
  • Support the drafting of institutional reports, correspondence and other written inputs.
  • Support IDLO advocacy activities through organization of events, networking with key IDLO stakeholders and collaborating with IDLO’s Communications Unit on social media opportunities.
  • Maintain and update the list of New York contacts for IDLO Permanent Observer Mission.
  • Support the administration and overall functioning of the Permanent Observer Mission including filing, payments, human resources, procurement etc.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor 

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE 

Education and Work experience

  • Graduate degree in international development, public or business administration, public policy or relevant social science from a recognized university is essential.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience, including with an international organization is required; some experience with UN system is an advantage.
  • Professional experience in organizing high level events would be an asset;

Languages

  • Full proficiency (both oral and written) in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language would be an asset. 

Specific knowledge, skills and competencies

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary;
  • Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others and exhibits interest in having two-way communication;
  • Ability to perform a broad range of protocol functions; knowledge of the structure and functioning of international organizations and intergovernmental bodies;
  • Understanding of the sensitivities involved in dealing with member states and other stake holders, including senior officials of international organizations and the diplomatic community;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of international organizations such as the UN system and events involving protocol;
  • Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results;
  • Enthusiastic and proactive attitude in building partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders, including at the senior level;
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines, flexibility and an entrepreneurial spirit;
  • Proficient use and good knowledge of standard ICT software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet software;
  • Keen sense of ethics, integrity and commitment to IDLO's mandate.

Terms and Conditions

For this Internationally recruited professional position, IDLO shall offer the selected candidate an Affiliate Contract of 24 months, with possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funding.

IDLO shall offer an annual basic salary of Eur €42,000.- and a benefits package including provident fund contribution (14%), medical insurance, leave entitlements in accordance with IDLO Employee Regulations and Rules. Relocation and installation support are also available for internationally recruited employees.
