Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 stations worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Quality Management, Data Review and Fusion Unit under the Office of the Director, International Data Centre Division (IDC).

Reporting Lines

Under the direct supervision of the Director, International Data Centre Division, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide advice on the production of bulletins on fused events through the review of  integrated data and products (Seismic, Hydroacoustic, Infrasound (SHI) and Radionuclide) and the development of  Fused Event Tools;
  2. Ensure that IDC products emanating from seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasound technologies meet and maintain specific standards of quality in all levels of data acquisition and processing, interactive analysis, product generation, product distribution, and special event analysis, providing advice as necessary to the Director and relevant Sections;
  3. Plan and implement approved changes to procedures for enhancing the quality of IDC waveform and fused event products and processes, and ensure the continuation of high quality services;
  4. Perform and/or assist in in-depth analysis and scientific investigation of detected seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasound phenomena of interest;
  5. Act as primary liaison point for discussions on bulletins and quality control matters;  
  6. Perform other duties as assigned which may include working on weekends and holidays or periods on call.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geophysics or a related field.

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years of relevant working experience in the field of observational seismology, hydroacoustic or infrasound, preferably including a good knowledge of UNIX Operations Systems and SQL.

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages is desirable.

Remuneration:

CTBTO offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission. The salary offered may be subject to deductions to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and Health Insurance Scheme.
