Objective of the programme

To provide support to IEDCR Field Laboratory in Cox’s Bazar Medical College, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Purpose of the activity

Under the overall supervision, guidance and monitoring of the Head of Sub Office (HOSO) Cox’s Bazar in consultation with Team Leader (Health Security and Emergency) WCO BAN and direct supervision of Team Lead Health Operations and Technical Expertise, the incumbent ensures systems to take samples and get them tested in field laboratory, from patients (FDMNs and host community) suffering from suspected infectious diseases, are operational.

Along with the existing capacity like molecular setup for COVID-19, diphtheria and serology for Rota virus, HCV IgM, dengue NS1 antigen, dengue IgM, HEV IgM, HAV IgM, HBsAg, leptospirosis IgM, Scrub typhus IgM, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) IgM and Pertussis IgM bacteriological culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be implemented.

Spectrum of molecular testing will be expanded for detection of arbovirus, respiratory pathogens and others depending on type of outbreaks.

Description of duties:

The incumbent will provide support through performing of the following duties (not limited to):

  • Supervision and monitoring of laboratory activities both at IEDCR Field Laboratory at Cox’s Bazar Medical College and referring laboratories in Cox’s Bazar
  • Oversee the activities of Medical Technologist (MTs) working in the laboratory
  • Overall management of IEDCR field lab including staff, consumables, equipment, etc. including recording keeping
  • Use different identification methods (molecular, serology and culture) for detection of infectious agents
  • Interpretation of laboratory results and reporting on regular basis
  • Regular reporting to Director, CSO (Virology) and Public Health Emergency Operation Center (PHEOC) coordinator of IEDCR, and other officials as designated by Government.
  • Maintenance of liaison among stakeholders (Cox’s Bazar Medical College, Cox’s Bazar District Hospital, referring laboratories as well as development partners) with the help of IEDCR, including through Laboratory Committee and Laboratory Core Group
  • Ensure good laboratory practices, biosafety, and biosecurity and proper laboratory waste management.
  • Implement new laboratory techniques as per instruction from IEDCR
  • Prepare monthly work plans, including staffing roster, and share weekly progress report and any ad hoc reports.
  • To perform other jobs as and when necessary as assigned by functional supervisor

Required Qualifications:

Education:

Essential: Medical Degree (MBBS) or bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from a recognized university and Post graduate qualification in Microbiology or related field.

Desirable: Training on relevant filed

Experience:

Essential:

At least 5 years of relevant work experience of which at least one year in laboratory setting.

Desirable:

  • Experience in programme or programme support in UN/ International Organization, NGO or Government
  • Previous experience of working in COVID-19 testing laboratory or other high threat pathogens laboratories and or emergency context

  • Excellent writing/reporting and editing skills, communication and presentation skills in English and Bengali.
