OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department for Social Determinants of Health advances global health through the prevention of injuries, support safety and mobility needs of Members States. The objectives of the Safety and Mobility team are to: support activities to attain the goal of the UN supported the second Decade of Actionfor Road Safety (2021-2030) which is to reduce by 50% the projected increase inroad traffic deaths by 2030; provide technical support to Member States to increase the proportion of countries with good road safety laws from15% to 50% as requested by UN General Assembly resolutions; build capacity in regions and countries to implement the recommendations of the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention and related WHA resolutions; provide global leadership and foster partnerships in the area of road safety through the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Review national/state road safety and trauma care legislations and related amendments for the global status reports on road safety. 2. Liaise closely with Regional Data Coordinators (RDCs) and National Data Coordinators (where appropriate) to validate information extracted from legislations.3. Develop and maintain a database of country based legislations, updating with amendments as they are provided by RDCs.4. Provide technicalinput to Country and Regional Offices participating in the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety with regard to assessing, developing or amending road safety legislations.5. Participate in building human capacity at country level with regard to legislative, regulatory and policy development through high level meetings, workshops and a lawyer development programme. 6. Assist with the development of appropriate normative guidelines and related legislative documents. 7. Provide technical support on legislative issues to the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration as part of WHO secretariat.8. Act as WHO focal person on GRSP administrated small grants for road safety advocates.9. Participate and assist in other road safety or policy/legislation related activities withinSDH as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: --> University degree in Law.
Desirable: Additional training in public health or public health policy.

Experience

Essential: At least 5 years of experience working in the area of public health legislation.
Desirable: --> Experience of working in a low- or middle-income countries.-->Experience with the UN system, in general, and the WHO system, in particular.

Skills

-->Proven ability to analyze and assess legal text.--> Proven ability to write legal and health policy documents in English. Excellent analytical and organizational skills.--> Deliver high quality work on time.--> Able to coordinate, plan and implement projects and activities with minimum supervision but work equally well as part of a team.--> Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the internet.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4297 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
