Job Overview:

The Media, Advocacy and Information Coordinator Coordinator will be responsible for supporting NRC Afghanistan with the development, coordination and effective delivery of communications, media and advocacy activities in line with the country advocacy priorities and Afghanistan country strategy.

Working closely with the Advocacy Manager and programme and operations staff in the Country Office, Area and Field offices, AELA Regional and Head Office, the Communications Coordinator will be responsible delivering high-quality media, communications, and advocacy products and resources to a wide and diverse range of audiences. 

The Media, Advocacy and Information Coordinator will play a key role in strengthening the capacity and engagement of NRC Afghanistan staff to contribute to and deliver advocacy, communications, and media initiatives.

Generic Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of a media and communications workplan in line with NRC Country and advocacy strategy
  • Build relevant external and internal networks (including journalists, media organisations, other media points of contact); develop and maintain the CO media contacts database; pitch and coordinate interviews with local media.
  • Support with drafting, distribution, and follow-up media products, including press releases, Op-Eds, and visibility and communications products including reports and newsletters.
  • Identify and develop case studies and stories that showcase NRC’s work and advocacy messaging, in collaboration with programme and operations teams.
  • Develop and produce high-quality communications, advocacy and media products in line with NRC’s programming and advocacy goals.
  • Ensure NRC and donor branding and visibility is in line with global NRC identity guidelines.
  • Support to develop and execute the Advocacy Strategy, including by drafting key messages, talking points and Q&A documents
  • Deliver inductions and trainings for staff in order to strengthen NRC Afghanistan’s advocacy, communications and media capacity and engagement

Specific responsibilities

  • Gather and produce high-quality photo, video, and written communications products to share advocacy messages and profile programmatic and operational success and challenges
  • Improve the quality of NRC Afghanistan’s donor visibility and communications content in order to secure and maintain funding
  • Support strategic engagement with national and international media to build NRC Afghanistan’s profile as a go-to source on displacement in Afghanistan and enable space for public advocacy messaging
  • Contextualize and improve awareness/understanding of guidance and SOPs by NRC Afghanistan teams to uphold principles and professionalism of public communications; mentor and coach focal points for content gathering and public information in NRC field offices

Qualification:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in journalism and/or media management, including experience in social media.
  • Experience working in communications for a humanitarian organization will also be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and review draft documents in English language.
  • Understanding and respect for humanitarian work, particularly relating to refugee and displacement issues
  • High level of computer literacy, including use of Word, Power point, Photoshop, high level photography and videography skills.

Education:

  • Degree in journalism or communications is highly regarded but experience, motivation and/or demonstrated ability is more important.
