About the Vaccines Program
Immunization is a powerful tool for saving lives and improving health outcomes globally. Each year, national immunization programs reach 22 million infants in sub-Saharan Africa alone, and since the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) was launched in 1974, 2 to 3 million deaths have been averted each year, globally. For every dollar invested in immunization, there is a US$16 return, making it one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available. However, despite these tremendous successes, significant gaps still remain, with 2 million children (primarily in lower-income and lower-middle-income countries) dying each year from vaccine-preventable diseases, and an estimated 20 million children still under-immunized. Since 2010, CHAI has worked to save lives and reduce the burden from vaccine-preventable diseases by improving access to immunization services in resource-limited settings. CHAI does this by strengthening national immunization programs at the country level and leveraging that experience to improve the global immunization ecosystem.
In Zimbabwe, CHAI is initiating its vaccines program by working with EPI to strengthen immunization management systems. Even though Zimbabwe maintains relatively high immunization coverage rates and has successfully introduced new and under-utilized vaccines, the immunization program continues to face significant challenges in resource mobilization and effective utilization. Economic pressures, currency volatility, and fast approaching transitions from development partner support require EPI to develop innovative management systems to not only maintain immunization coverage levels but improve them to achieve targets and save more lives.

Background on Role
CHAI is seeking a Volunteer to contribute to CHAI Zimbabwe’s Vaccine program. The position will require extensive engagement with the MoHCC, other partner organizations and various teams within CHAI. The position will be based in Harare and may require local travel. We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and flexible individual to support CHAI Zimbabwe’s Vaccines program. Work as an integral part of the Vaccines program to support the following:

● Analyze planning processes, tools and templates currently being used in the Immunization system for optimization and develop an improved operational planning package.
● Support coordination of planning efforts between the Government agencies (national as well as sub-national) and partner agencies.
● Develop data dashboards and coordinate the launch of data review mechanisms/platforms at the provincial level.
● Conduct workload analysis on the National EPI workforce and devise a model to evaluate current staffing gaps, hiring requirements and a feasible recruitment plan aligned with budgetary projections and funds availability.
● Support advocacy efforts to motivate the Government into accepting the recommendations of the above mentioned EPI staff workload analysis.

● Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field, business, public health, development, sciences or a related discipline

● 2+ years’ of professional working experience, preferably in the public health or private sectors

● Excellent analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills
● Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement new initiatives
● High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
● Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations, to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to set priorities
● Willingness and ability to travel if required and at short notice
