OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department for Social Determinants of Health advances global health through the prevention of injuries, including thesupport of safety and mobility needs of Members States. The objectives of the Safety and Mobility Unit are to: Promote sustainable solutions to the safety and mobility challenges of today, including road traffic injuries, drowning and falls. The Safety and Mobility Unit does so by providing strategic leadership on these topics; developing evidence, norms and standards, including implementation tools; building national capacities to address these issues; and fostering global advocacy. The Safety and Mobility Unit engages a broad range of partners and networks to scale up effective action and track progress in countries.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will work closely with the thematic expert lead for drowning and other unintentional injuries to: Coordinate Secretariat functions for a global partnership on drowning prevention. Assist with coordination on UN-system drowning prevention activities between WHO and UN partners. Respond to requests for technical support for drowning prevention from Regional and Country Offices as well as Member States. Assist with the facilitation of observance of World Drowning Prevention Days and other drowning prevention advocacy opportunities. Promote the visibility of drowning prevention and its links with development, disaster risk reduction, and child survival. Pursue funding opportunities for further support for WHO's drowning work. Provide technical support to other unintentional injury prevention areas as required. Provide technical advice and represent WHO at various meetings. Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: First level university degree in Public Health,International Development or a related discipline.
Desirable: An advanced university degree (Masters level or above in Health (medicine orpublic health)).

Experience

Essential: At least five years of successful experience in unintentional injury prevention with demonstrable contributions to drowning prevention. Work experience in a low- or middle-income country. Familiarity with the UN system, in general, and the WHO system.
Desirable: Demonstrable success in establishment and coordination of multi-stakeholder collaborations.Previous work experience with WHO or another UN agency. Peer-reviewed publications in the unintentional injury area.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4307 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
