Job Overview:

The English Language Specialist supports adult English language learners in integrating into their community through English language instruction, US citizenship preparation, and connection to external post-secondary and community support services. The English Language Specialist facilitates contextualized English lessons and promotes civic engagement. Instruction is offered both in-person and virtually. This is a grant-funded part-time position through September 30, 2022 with the potential to extend the contract.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and personalize English language and civics lesson plans, including activities and auxiliary materials, from a provided curriculum. Utilize language learning apps and learning management systems to promote asynchronous learning.
  • Facilitate instruction for 2-3 co-occurring cohorts of adult learners (ESL 1-5) for 90-minute sessions, twice a week.
  • Maintain all student records, including personal identifying information, test scores, attendance, and accommodations in accordance with privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with adult students, using culturally competent, student-centered, and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Participate in paid professional learning opportunities, communities of practice, and implementation meetings.
  • Meet with program participants and evaluate them for needs, including retention issues, continuing education, employment support, high school equivalency, and immigration services.
  • Follow all IRC policies, procedures and protocols including adherence to the IRC Way and Child Safeguarding.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education:

·Bachelor’s degree required; specialization in education, teaching, English language acquisition, or related field of study preferred.

·Must possess, or have the ability to possess with 90 days, the Arizona Adult Educators Certificate.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with adult English language learners.

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Proficient in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by IRC’s clients is desired; including Spanish, Dari, Farsi, and/or Pashto.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research and problem-solving purposes.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • May require weekend and/or evening work.
