Background/IRC Summary:  The mission of the IRC’s Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) department is to create opportunities for refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations to survive and thrive in America. The US has evacuated thousands of Afghan evacuees who are hosted at military bases around the country. The IRC is providing support on multiple military bases across the country to facilitate the processing and resettlement of this population.

Job Overview/Summary:  The Interpreter provides in person interpretation to facilitate, with accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality, the language needs of Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and their service providers. Activities include providing professional interpretation services on site for a special project of welcoming the Afghan evacuees.

There are multiple interpreter roles requires for the Afghan evacuee operations and selected candidate will be assigned to an interpreter role based on the need of the project.

Major Responsibilities:

The scope of work includes but is not limited to the following:

·Model, promote and uphold a culture of values as reflected in the IRC way: Standards of Professional Conduct –Integrity, Accountability, Service and Equality and the Respect at work policy

·Provide accurate, impartial and confidential interpretation to LEP individuals and service providers in a variety of settings ranging in complexity, including medical and immigration services

·Participate in orientation session

·Track assignment and work hours assigns

·Adherence to  IRC ‘s safeguarding policies including those developed for interpreters.

·Maintain strict confidentiality throughout the working duration

·Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Key Working Relationships:

Position Reports to: Interpreter Lead

Position directly supervises:N/A

Indirect Reporting: QC ManagerOther Internal and/or external contacts: Position requires close collaboration with Govt agencies as necessary. 

Job Requirements:

Education: Interpretation certification preferable, Formal education in Linguistics or related field is high desirable

Work Experience:

§Minimum 1 year professional interpretation experience preferred

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

§Cultural sensitivity; ability to build trust with clients, colleagues and partners

§Must be a team player, detail oriented and reliable

§Ability to work successfully with others

Language Skills: Fluent in written and spoken English is a must and proficiency in written and spoken in Dari and Pashto

Working Environment:

  • It is expected that post holder will perform duties within the military base and occasionally some work being done from the temporary housing/hotel
  • Considering the response nature it is expected that post holder will perform duties 6 days a week including evening work (as necessary) however, working days and schedule will be notified upon hiring
