In 2015, the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Arab League endorsed the “Cairo Declaration for Women the Arab and strategic plan for the advancement of Arab women beyond-2015” (the “Cairo Declaration”), adopted, together with the Executive Strategic Action Plan, on 29  March 2017 at the 28th Arab Summit. The Cairo Declaration and the Executive Action Plan were adopted under the umbrella document of the "Development Agenda for Women in the Arab Region 2030".

The League of Arab States - Department of Women, Family, and Childhood (LAS - WFCD) is mandated to review every five years the implementation of the Development Agenda for Women in the Arab Region 2030, which includes the Cairo Declaration. The regional review also represents an important opportunity to review and update the Cairo Declaration, for instance by incorporate climate change and COVID-19 response.

For this purpose, LAS – WFCD is developing a questionnaire to collect data that will inform the review process (LAS Questionnaire).

UN Women Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) is regularly monitoring progress on gender equality and women's empowerment in the Arab States region.
