Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship position is located in the Public Information Section of United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) in New York.

Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms.

As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. UNMAS also responds to specific requests for support from the UN Secretary-General or designated official.

The Internship is for six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Public Information Officer, duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Update UNMAS social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.).
- Collect and analyze social media data on an ongoing basis.
- Create social media analytics reports.
- Assist in creating visuals for social media and digital platforms.
- Assist in creating and editing videos using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
- Help create content as dictated by the monthly editorial calendar.
- Assist in monitoring media coverage of mine action and international relations issues.
- Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of media material.
- Liaise with public information focal points in UNMAS field programmes in regard to various requests.
- Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, talking points, articles, presentations etc.
- Assist with organizing events, website management and mailing public information materials.
- Attend and summarize conferences and meetings.
- Assist in maintaining databases.
- Perform other duties as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

1. Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

2. The field of study must be closely related to the type of internship you are applying for.

3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc.).

4. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

It should be noted that for any internship selections after 1 September 2021, the internship will be in person at the duty station, local conditions permitting, with the option of flexible working arrangements. The intern will work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member of the Section. The internship is unpaid and full-time.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
