Job Description

Within the Programme, we are looking for a Computing Support Engineer (2nd line) to join CERN.

You will be part of the Quality and Support team and you will mainly collaborate with the agile development teams of CERN's Business Computing (BC) group, but also with CERN's IT Department and the CERN Service Desk.  Furthermore, you will have close contact and interact directly with end users from BC's business partner units. There is a variety of different activities handled by the team and you will take on the following responsibilities (list in no particular order): 

• Manage access rights of the applications provided by the group;
• Diagnose and troubleshoot software and hardware issues (e.g. account setup and network configuration);
• Be involved in the streamlining of support workflows and provide accurate reports;
• Interact with relational databases and data warehouses using SQL;
• Provide/develop tools used internally by the Quality and Support team to automate recurring support and configuration tasks;
• Maintain, support and enhance existing (legacy) systems;
• Provide end user support and carry out data and software migrations.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other relevant course.
• You have no more than 4 years' experience after completing your highest diploma (BSc or MSc).

Essential skills and experience:

• You have the flexibility to work in a variety of domains in a multidisciplinary team;
• You have the capability to express complex technical aspects in terms that are easily understood by end users;
• You have experience using object-oriented programming languages (e.g. Java);
• You have experience with relational databases and SQL (eg. Oracle);
•  You have experience with the configuration of Windows (Desktop/Server), Linux, MacOS environments;
• You are comfortable in working with both new and legacy systems.

The following skills are not required, but would be advantageous:

• Experience in working in a lean/agile environment;
• Experience using scripting languages (e.g. Bash, PowerShell, Python);
• Experience in working with data warehouses, data integration / ETL tools, message/event processing systems;
• Experience with version control systems (and particularly with Git);
• Ability to communicate in both English and French or an undertaking to acquire both languages rapidly;
• Initial experience in working in virtualized/containerized environments (e.g. OpenStack, OpenShift).
   

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

Additional Information

CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion. In return, we offer:

• An employment contract for between six months (minimum) up to a maximum of 36 months. A regular fellowship duration is 24 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,305 to 6,586 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
