Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.


The Waste Technology Section (WTS) assists Member States with radioactive waste management. It covers a broad spectrum of activities and is organized into teams responsible for radioactive waste management (pre-disposal and disposal), and the management of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS). Efforts are focused mainly on the elaboration and implementation of comprehensive and integrated radioactive waste management (RWM) policies and strategies, the development of RWM infrastructure, the promotion of good practices for sustainable, safe and cost-effective RWM, enabling access to current scientific and technological developments. Given the widespread nature of RWM challenges, the Section cooperates with a wide range of units in the IAEA and international organizations.

Main Purpose

 

The Radioactive Waste Disposal Specialist contributes project management experience and specialized technical knowledge in the field of radioactive waste disposal to (i) planning of the radioactive waste disposal work programme, (ii) implementation of corresponding activities, and (iii) support of Technical Cooperation projects focused on radioactive waste disposal. (S)He reports to the Waste Disposal Team Leader, who reports to the Waste Technology Section Head.

Role

 

The Radioactive Waste Disposal Specialist is\: (1) a programme planner, developer and implementer, contributing project management experience as well as specialized technical knowledge and experience to the planning, development and implementation of the IAEA's programme; (2) a scientific secretary/technical expert, developing technical publications, planning and holding consultancy meetings, workshops, and technical meetings; and (3) a technical and project officer, assessing and implementing technical cooperation projects on radioactive waste disposal with Member States, and promoting, coordinating and evaluating coordinated research projects (CRPs) in the area of waste disposal. (S)He should (i) manage and promote an international network of cooperation on disposal and (ii) promote the development of innovative disposal solutions addressing specific Member States and/or radioactive waste inventory management needs.

Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Advise and support Member States regarding specific projects in the field of radioactive waste management including disposal and raise awareness of approaches with potential to address specific Member States needs as per their national inventory.
  • Initiate, plan and lead consultancy and technical meetings, workshops, training courses and webinars to facilitate the sharing of experience, build technical capacity and transfer of knowledge in the field of radioactive waste disposal.
  • Document the current state-of-knowledge and good practices in the development and implementation of radioactive waste disposal concepts for technical and non-technical audiences through the preparation of technical publications, presentations and e-tools including development of interactive on-line content.
  • Lead the development of lecture and training material in accordance with the IAEA’s RWM programme including eLearning.
  • Evaluate technical cooperation projects and in the capacity of technical officer plan and implement seminars, workshops, expert missions, training courses and facilitate scientific visits and fellowships.
  • Contribute technical expertise to the development and implementation of the IAEA's radioactive waste management programme, financial plan, annual reports, and to meetings of the International Radioactive Waste Technical Committee (WATEC) and others, according to requirements.
  • Facilitate international cooperation in radioactive waste disposal through establishment, development and maintenance of professional networks to promote the sharing and transfer of information and knowledge related to use of state-of-the-art approaches towards safe and sustainable radioactive waste disposal.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

 

  • An Advanced university in geoscience, engineering or in another related technical or scientific discipline.
  • Minimum seven years of working experience in RWM, in particular in radioactive waste disposal.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience in the strategies, methodologies, technologies and practices used to dispose of radioactive waste, as well as awareness of approaches and processes under development in view of improving, optimizing or otherwise enhancing our ability to contribute to the sustainable use of nuclear technologies.
  • Experience of managing projects at the international level and awareness of international programmes regarding radioactive waste disposal.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration

 

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $74913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 39329, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance.
