OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

UNESCO, Kabul Office in collaboration with United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is implementing a Local Peace Initiative (LPI) in Fayzabad, Herat and Kunduz on peace education in collaboration with local Universities. The initiative aims to build capacities of local youth/students at the Universities on peace education and thus promote social cohesion in the society.

 

The intervention is based on a Training of Trainers (ToT) model, whereby a group of selected University professors and lecturers would be trained as trainers in each University, who would then run capacity building workshops with University students/youth . The trained youth would then engage in debates and other interactive activities to share their learnings. The project will culminate in a Peace Conference or Festival at each  University to share the final outputs of the project.

 

The project will be executed in close cooperation with Fayzabad University, Herat University, Kunduz University, Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, Office of the Provincial Governor, the Department of Hajj and Religious Affairs and local Civil Society Organisations.

 

UNESCO is recruiting an international expert in the domain of peace education with experience of having implemented projects with young people to help drive this project. The expert would be responsible for developing a training module for the trainers, mentor the trainers during their journey of facilitating trainings and provide overall support for the execution of the project in collaboration with UNAMA.

Long Description Main duties and responsibilities

 

Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Office in Kabul and Representative of UNESCO to Afghanistan, the direct supervision of the Head of Education Unit and day to day guidance of the Project Officer-Curriculum Reform, the incumbent will manage the project and perform the following tasks:

 

1. Preparation:

  • Get familiar with the peace issues relevant to Afghanistan including but not limited to:
    • The history of conflict in the country, its ethnic, social and political roots
    • The history of conflict in Fayzabad, Herat and Kunduz cities, and their linguistic and social diversity
    • The social milieu of the youth of Afghanistan
  • Set up interactions with the following in order to get an understanding of the country and project context:
    • UNESCO and UNAMA project managers
    • Focal points at Fayzabad University, Herat University and Kunduz University.
    • some students/young people from Fayzabad University, Herat and Kunduz University

2. Design and Development:

  • Design and develop a training module for university students/young people on peace and social cohesion which includes but is not limited to:
    • 12 hours of interactive training modules for university students/young people on peace and social cohesion, including core issues of conflict resolution, identity, values, peace, resilience, understanding violence, empathy and compassion. This would include facilitation notes, presentations, handouts, assignments, audio-video materials, etc. Incorporate UNAMA’s existing training materials into the newly designed training materials to whatever extent possible.
  • Design and develop a 5-day training module for University professors and lecturers, who will be trained as trainers of the above 12-hour module to university students. This will include:
    • Training modules on facilitation skills required to facilitate the 12-hour module with university students/young people both physically and online. This will include the provision of ‘mock’ participant led sessions coupled with feedback.
  • Develop a criterion for the selection of University professors and lecturers to be trained as trainers.
  • Develop a criterion to select university students/young people to participate in this project.
  • Provide inputs on the design of a Peace Conference/Festival.

3. Facilitation:

  • Facilitate  three Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops of 5 day duration each, for University professors and lecturers( at Fayzabad, Herat and Kunduz) to enable them to facilitate the 12-hour training module with university students/young people. This will also include facilitating all the sessions of the 12-hour training module for demonstration and training purposes.
  • Facilitate at least two online 3-hour sessions with Trainers as a follow up to the ToT at an appropriate time once a sizable number of Trainers have executed workshops.

4. Mentoring, online support and on the job training:

  • Observe online sessions to provide feedback to the Trainers to improve their facilitation skills and mentor them.
  • Provide online support by email or internet calls to Trainers as per their need at a mutually agree time.
- Details of deliverables and schedule

The consultancy work is envisaged to be in 3 phases with the following deliverables of the international expert. All deliverables should be submitted in editable formats such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint files.

Phase 1 (late May -June 2021):Preparation, Design and Development (Remote Work Modality)

  • Submit an outline of the 5 day training module, which includes the outline of the 12 hour training of university students, for sign off by UNESCO.
  • Submit the 5-day training module for Training of Trainers (ToT), which will include the 12 hour training module for university students/young people, complete with:  facilitation notes, presentations, handouts, assignments, audio-video materials, etc.  for both the 12 hour module and the ToT.
  • Submit a criterion for the selection of University professors and lecturers to be trained as trainers.
  • Submit a criterion to select university students/young people to participate in this project.
 

Phase 2 (July - August 2021) : Facilitation of three Training of Trainers (ToT) workshops at Fayzabad, Herat and Kunduz or remotely if COVID/security situation does not allow physical workshops.

  • Submit a short report of the three Training of Trainers (ToTs) workshops facilitated at Fayzabad, Herat and Kunduz as per pt.6 of main duties and responsibilities in this document.

 

Phase 3 (August-September 2021): Online Mentoring of Trainers

  • Submit a short report on the online support to Trainers and observations on the trainings monitored online  as per pt.6 of main duties and responsibilities in this document.
  • Written inputs on the Peace Conference/Festivals and ideas for sustainability of the project
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • At least a Masters in Education, Social Sciences, Peace Education, Conflict Resolution or a related field.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience of at least 10 years in the design and development of peace education modules and programmes for young people.

Skills:

  • Strong facilitation skills for workshops in peace education.
  • Strong sensitivity and adaptability (cultural, gender, religion, race and nationality).
  • Ability to summarize and provide concise and comprehensible feedback.
  • Proficient in using office productivity tools- MS Office, and video conferencing tools like Skype, Zoom and MS Teams, etc.

Language:

  • Excellent written and oral English, with effective English presentation skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Desirable qualifications:

Education:

  • Doctoral degree in Peace Education, preferably relating to youth.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience in mentoring University professors and lecturers and conducting Training of Trainers.
  • Prior experience of working in Afghanistan or Central/South Asia.
  • Prior experience of working with Universities.

Language:

  • Good knowledge in Dari/Pashto or Persian.
