OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director General, the authority of the Director for POM, the supervision of the Chief of the Section for Universal Access to Information, and in close cooperation with relevant Advisor and Programme Specialists responsible for the implementation of the activities, the contractor shall provide support to increase visibility of the section’s work on promoting Access to Information worldwide, develop promotional and informational products and activities for the awareness raising campaigns. 
The contractor will propose communication ideas and input in particularly:

Long Description

1. Visibility for International Days

The Consultant will produce and implement visibility for International days, namely the  International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August), International Day to Universal Access to Information 2017 (28 September), the International Day International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December), World Arabic Language Day (18 December) and International Week such as Open Access Week (3rd week of October).

These strategies should include preparing a specific plan for each international day or week to guide implementation according to a timeline and deliverables. This will include:

  • Planning and implementing social media campaigns to extend the visibility of the International Day and Week’s messages;
  • Writing, editing, and occasional translation of news and feature stories, videos, infographics, website items, media kit and social media content for the events, as well as providing analysis of media coverage and social media engagement;
  • Identifying partnerships to give a lead or gain strategic ownership for the day/week;
  • Leveraging media partnerships with existing and identifying new partners, including initiating and maintaining contacts with national/international media to ensure global coverage;
  • Collaboration with the web development team, to update information on the international day’s website and producing elements for websites; and liaising with the Executive Office team and the UNESCO’s web developers where essential.

2. Support in the visibility of initiatives in Universal Access to Information like the monitoring and reporting on SDG 16.10.2, capacity building for open solutions, promoting linguistic diversity and multilingualism on Internet, technical advice on access to information laws and advocating for access for people with disabilities by performing the following tasks:

  • Identification of target audiences, work plan with specific reference to social media and web platforms, and impact indicators. 
  • Conceptualizing, writing, editing, occasional translations, communication and advocacy materials such as policy papers, factsheets, briefings, brochures, Power Point presentations, talking points, key messages for social media.
  • Produce promotional multimedia content such as news and feature stories, as well as videos and infographics.
  • In collaboration with the web development team, helps update information of project website and produce website visual items.
  • Assist in other tasks such as report to the donors, Power Point presentations and briefings.

 

3. Liaise with all relevant colleagues in:

  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation as well as photographic and audio-visual materials
  • Developing and updating a master database of media/journalists and partners for each targeted initiative.

Education 
•    Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, or social sciences.

 

Work Experience
•    At least 5 years of professional experience in journalism and/or communications, mainly at international level;
•    Experience in the area of communication and public relation campaigns; 
•    Experience working with intergovernmental organizations on similar assignments;

 

Skills/Competencies
•    Excellent communication (written and oral) and editorial skills. Write clearly, concisely and persuasively
•    Proficiency in graphic design for publication, including using the adobe creative suite software (Photoshop, Illustrator, and inDesign)
•    Knowledge in content management system, web and motion design
•    Excellent abilities to deliver creative solutions
•    Ability to plan, prioritize and organize own work and to demonstrate initiative.
•    Ability to work within a multicultural team.
•    Excellent analytical evaluative skills. 
•    Ability to work in diverse and challenging environments and to meet deadlines.

 

Languages
•    Excellent knowledge – written and oral - of English and French.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

Work Experience
•    Experience in working on the organization of a large-scale awareness campaigns or with the United Nations system and understanding of their functioning and procedures would be an asset.


Languages
•    Knowledge of other official languages of UNESCO (Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian) will be an asset.

Additional Information:

  • The selected candidate will work remotely. No travel supported.
  • Contract duration is for a period of 8 months (from approximatively May to December 2021)
