Gender Justice Specialist

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Project Managers (PM) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Gender Justice Specialist will:

• Conduct a needs assessment of the correctional facilities refurbishment per international human rights standards and gender-responsive considerations
• Lead in developing a training curriculum(s) for correctional officers and inmates (both male and female) on gender-sensitivity
• Lead in conducting workshops/training for correctional officers and inmates (both male and female) on gender-sensitivity, together with the National Human Rights Institution and Ministry of Justice
• Coordinate with relevant institutions, such as Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion, National Human Rights Institution, UN Office of Human Rights Advisor, UNODC, UNFPA, and/or ILO
• Support the Access to Justice portfolio manager in providing (through Civil Society Organizations and law firms) the vocational and literacy training to female inmates and ex-prisoners and legal and psychosocial assistance to female inmates and pre-trial detainees
• Responsible for coordinating and participating in frequent field visits to prison facilities and detention centers with defense lawyers and a psychologist
• Any other support requested by the Access to Justice portfolio manager, including providing strategic/technical inputs on gender and criminal justice, recruitment/hiring processes of CSOs/vendors, and monitoring and reporting of the project

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. gender studies, criminal justice/criminology or areas related to gender and violence/human rights; a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:

• At least 3-5 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level on gender mainstreaming, criminal justice, human rights, law enforcement, or other relevant programmes; direct experience with correctional facilities or relevant government institutions in the Southease Asia and the Pacific is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
• Demonstrated command of relevant human rights conventions and experienced in providing gender-responsive training
• Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
• Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;

• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
• Sound security awareness;
• Have affinity with or interest in workingin the institutional capacity development and access to justice in the post-conflict context, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
