Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Protection and Operations, the UN Volunteer Associate External Relations and Reporting Officer will be based in Goma, DRC and perform the following functional tasks:

  • Support the Office of the DSRSG by preparing and distributing agendas and minutes, assisting in the organization of meetings, preparing read outs and Notes to File;

  • Keep abreast of all developments in the pillar across the field offices and sections to prepare appropriate briefings and reports;

  • Develop and maintain working relationships, where appropriate and as directed, with the government, NGOs, and UN agencies to ensure cooperation on inter-related activities;

  • Prepare periodic reports and written products, i.e. updates, sitreps, information notes for senior managers, quarterly SG report inputs, code cables, and activity-specific reports and briefing materials/factsheets for external audiences;

  • Organize and accompany missions and visits for Mission leadership as well as external VIP UN visitors and diplomatic missions to the field offices as required and prepare and update briefing notes for each section/component/field office or issue as well as profiles for government and other interlocutors as necessary;

  • Support the DSRSG in preparation for meetings and field missions, including drafting of talking points and background briefings, in coordination with the Special Assistant;

  • Perform any other tasks as directed by the DSRSG and/or Chief of Office.

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Bachelor or higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. International Relations, Political Science, Journalism, Communications; Law or a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:

At least 2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in a field related to international affairs, external relations, communications, media relations, reporting or other relevant programmes; experience working in the UN system or other international development organization or NGO is required; previous experience working in a conflict or post-conflict environment is desirable.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
Area of expertise: Political affairs and political reporting Area of expertise details:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations/MONUSCO, therefore fluency in oral and written English is mandatory; knowledge of French is required, with fluency in French desirable.

Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet.
