Background

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. IRENA’s mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries. At present, IRENA has 163 Members (162 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 21 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.

The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. Under this context, the agency is actively supporting Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) in the transition process from predominantly fossil fuel dependence to a renewables-based and resilient energy system. To this end, part of the agency support focuses on pursing robust country-owed analysis to identify barriers and opportunities for fostering the deployment of renewable energies in SIDS.     

Objectives of the Internship Assignment

The internship post is located in the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre within the Islands team. The selected candidate will support IRENA activities on Islands including country analysis to support the development of national and regional analysis in the Caribbean, Pacific and Oceania, as well as providing support in other activities supporting the energy transition of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS), thus achieving the transformation from a predominantly fossil-based to a renewables-based and resilient energy system.

Particular Functions

In line with the objectives outlined above, the intern is expected to perform a range of technical and organizational functions, including but not limited to\:

  • Support with the modernisation and maintenance of the Quickscan platform; a tool focused on identifying barriers and opportunities for the deployment of renewable energies in Islands. 
  • Support with the implementation of the Quickscan tool, processing and reporting of results.
  • Provide active support with the enhancement and operation of digital tools focused on the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, as well as documentation of the energy sector.     
  • Analyse energy plans and roadmaps across specific SIDS and identify strategic RE projects and actions with the potential to enable a clean energy mix.
  • Collect and interpret data related to the energy sector and its visualization, identifying patterns and trends, as well as preparing reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of knowledge materials.
  • Obtain information and update databases related to the energy sector.
  • Provide any other information relevant to assigned areas or work.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Learning Areas

During the internship period, the successful applicant will develop a deep understanding on how to pursue country focused analysis of the energy sector and the supportive tools to complete this process, including, in particular, issues related to the application of digital tools for completing quantitative and qualitative analysis of a country energy system. The intern will also be able to further develop their skills related to research and analytical thinking about the renewable energy sector.

Timeframe

The internship is for a period of six months commencing on/about as soon as possible. The exact period will be determined based on the availability of the intern and the needs of the programme. The maximum duration of the internship is nine months, subject to the intern’s continued university enrolment and performance.

Minimum Requirements

  • Candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a Master's or doctorate programme at a recognized university at the time of application and for the duration of the internship or have recently graduated and is accepted into the internship programme within six months of their graduation.
  • Bachelor or postgraduate degree in renewable energy, engineering, computer/data science or related fields, or other relevant field related to the natural resources in combination with data science qualifications.
  • Candidates must be fluent in English (both oral and written) and demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills. Other languages e.g. French and Spanish will be considered an advantage.
  • Competencies\: Candidates should demonstrate solid teamwork, planning and organizing, professionalism and communications skills.
  • Candidates must be able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Preference is given to candidates studying in the fields of renewable energy, engineering, computer/data science or related fields, or other relevant field related to the natural resources in combination with data science qualifications
  • Candidates should indicate in their cover letter the period of availability.

Other key requirements

  • Experience with knowledge-based research tasks.
  • Knowledge on Java and proficient on data base frameworks such as SQL and NET Technology.
  • Good command of data visualization tools such as Tableau or other related tools.
  • Good command of Microsoft office tools.
  • Good understanding of the power system and renewable energy technologies.
  • Knowledge of further web standards and graphic design software is an advantage.
  • Previous experience in using optimisation modelling software applicable to islands is highly desirable (e.g. HOMER Pro and LEAP).

Internship Conditions

IRENA internships may be remunerated if an intern is not already sponsored by their government, university or institution.   In such cases, the intern is requested to indicate their sponsorship in their cover letter.

The selected intern will work remotely on a full-time basis (40 hours per week) as per the working hours of IRENA premises in Bonn, Germany.
