Overview of position
  • The Urban Water for Darfur Project (UW4D) aims to attain sustainable and more equitable access to water supply, improved sanitation services and hygiene behaviour for 400,000 urban poor people in two State capitals (300,000 in El Fasher in North Darfur and 100,000 Zalengei in Central Darfur), with an institutional capacity component, targeting the Urban Water Administrations in El Geneina (West Darfur) and Nyala (South Darfur), included to support sustainability. The project further seeks to reduce the current cost of water to households served under this project by at least seventy percent, making it affordable for the most marginalized population
 
  • To respond to the issues identified in the respective water and sanitation components, Our client and UNICEF will collaborate to support a knowledge management initiative in Darfur. Reducing the loss of knowledge while the UW4D project does not have the remaining duration or available budget for a fully-fledged initiative, considerable value can be added by a limited-scaled initiative to secure the benefits of the UW4D project and pilot some aspects of a knowledge management hub.
Role objectives
The Knowledge Management Expert will
  • Support the development of the knowledge repository and information access system,
  • Lead the formatting and capture of the content developed under the capacity building and master planning components of the UW4D project. This would include preparing training manuals based on materials developed by technical experts, guiding the development of podcasts and video training sessions, and
  • Build capacity in the public sector knowledge manager.
  • Provide input to communications products as required.
  • Provide input and support to link content to the proposed website.
The knowledge management expert will also prepare the KM work plan, contribute to UW4D project planning and strategy, prepare monthly progress reports, and prepare ToRs for supporting services and resources. The KM expert will collaborate closely with the capacity building and master planning teams, project management, the communications experts and sector experts appointed under the project, as well as with UNICEF and government partners.

Qualifications
Advanced university degree in communications, journalism or education. Candidates with technical degrees (engineering, environmental sciences, water sector) will be considered if they have more than three years experience in communications, training materials development, knowledge management or similar fields. Candidates with a first university degree may be accepted where they have three year’s additional experience.

Experience
• At least three years’ experience in preparing training materials, guidelines, templates, brochures, reports and other communications instruments. The experience may be based on technical content provided by others.
• Experience in translating technical information for non-technical audiences.
• Ability to tailor language and tone to suit audience. Ability to structure documents for specific purposes (guidelines, training manuals, etc).
• Experience in conceptualizing graphics for communication of technical content.
• Experience in work planning.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and spoken), including ability to listen and translate information from interviews to documents.
• Outstanding copywriting and editing skills.
Team management
  • The KM expert will collaborate with and build capacity in the SWC knowledge manager. The KM expert will collaborate with and oversee inputs of the communication expert into KM instruments.
