About the Office of Emergency Programmes

Humanitarian action is firmly established as core to UNICEF’s programming and is central to UNICEF’s Strategic Plan 2018-2021. UNICEF responds to an average of 300 emergencies every year, informing and shaping these interventions as a global leader for children. UNICEF’s Humanitarian Action aims to save lives and protect the rights of children affected by humanitarian crises and to address the underlying causes of vulnerability.

The Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS) represents UNICEF in many inter-agency and international processes. This includes UNICEF’s global cluster responsibilities. The role of cluster lead agencies is to facilitate a process aimed at ensuring well-coordinated and effective humanitarian responses in the sector or area of activity concerned.  The Global Cluster Coordination Unit is responsible manage inter-cluster initiatives and support humanitarian reform initiatives in relation to the coordination and planning of the humanitarian response.

Key objectives

The role will spearhead efforts to better position UNICEF as a leading cluster agency both internally and internally. As such, the Communications Intern will:

  • In collaboration with technical colleagues, develop briefing notes for high level meetings for the GCCU Chief, and occasionally for the director of EMOPS Geneva.
  • Draft/write/edit letters, reports, speeches, press releases, news articles and other key programme/advocacy/information materials for internal use/distribution and web-based dissemination.
  • Develop visual and compelling communication tools, help put in place the data collection mechanisms to showcase the extent and added value of the work.
  • Assist the GCCU team on quarterly newsletter and other communication products for raising the profile of the team in close collaboration with clusters/AoR and chief GCCU.
  • Contribute to the preparation of human-interest stories and case studies that show how UNICEF supported activities have impacted the lives of individual, families and communities.
  • Assist and extend support to UNICEF’s 3 clusters and 1 area of responsibility on external communications approaches. Help guide content development by the clusters and build it into regular processes (e.g. website content development)
  • Assist GCCU chief and consultant on the development of the strategy to position cluster coordination both internally and externally, identifying communications needs for different audiences, including donors.

General Eligibility criteria for internship with UNICEF:

To be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years (see specific requirements for this internship)
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF's working languages: English, French or Spanish. Fluency in the working language of the office you are applying to is required. (See specific requirements for this internship).
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and Have no other relatives in the line of authority that the intern will report to.
  • Individuals must demonstrate excellent academic performance through recent university or institution records.
  • Additional consideration will be given for any past experience.

Specific Qualifications/Requirements for this internship: 

  •  Advanced university degree in audiovisual communications, journalism, social sciences, international law, child rights and human rights, development planning, or a related technical field.
  • Good communication skills: ability to clearly and concisely present ideas and concepts in both oral and written form with excellent writing skills in English as an asset.
  • Interest in development and human rights issues, policies as well as social programming policies and trends in international development cooperation.
  • Ability to conceptualize, innovate, plan, and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
  • Planning, analytical, alliance building and organizational skills.
  • Experience with website content writing an asset
  • Experience in reporting to donors or fundraising an asset
  • Ability to meet deadlines
