1. Organizational Context

The fellowship is located in the Operations and Support Section of the PCT Information Systems (PCTIS) Division. The Section implements the service management framework for the portfolio of business applications supporting the PCT, a highly successful patent filing treaty. The Section coordinates with the application development teams, infrastructure teams and end users.  It delivers service desk, information architecture, release and deployment coordination and systems operation services to the PCT. The Section is also part of the RSP program where it collaborates to software and systems engineering activities, as well as cloud architecture, design, implementation and operations.

PCTISD has one fellowship to participate in the software engineering activities, in the context of business applications development and maintenance, collaborating as well to the definition and implementation of DevOps practices, both on-premises and in the cloud.

The broad spectrum of activities will provide Fellows with experience to strengthen their knowledge and competence in their field.

2. Duties and Responsibilities

With training by, and under the supervision of, the WIPO PCT Information Systems Division, Operations and Support Section staff, the Software Engineering Fellow shall provide support in the following areas as may be required\:

  • Perform software development, maintenance and debugging of PCT applications, especially in the evolution of the Software Transformation project.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of systems and solutions architecture, both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Establish, maintain, monitor and troubleshoot complex information system processes and critical events that contribute to business operations.
  • Update and maintain operational and technical documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

3. Requirements

a) Education\:

Essential\:

Recently graduated from an advanced university degree program in the field of Computing Science or Engineering.

b) Languages\:

Essential\:

Excellent (written and spoken) knowledge of English.

Desirable\:

Good knowledge of French.

c) Experience\:

Prior experience in Java development, DevOps, CI/CD, cloud technologies, logs shipment infrastructure, containerization and application management would be considered as an advantage but it is not a requirement.

d) Specific skills and competencies\:

Essential\:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and under pressure.
  • Capability to adapt and learn new technologies.

4. Terms and Conditions

a) Term of fellowship\: up to 12 months, with the possibility of renewable up to an additional 12 months, for a maximum of two years.

b) Anticipated Start Date\: September 15, 2021

c) Location\: WIPO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland.

d) Stipend\: CHF 5,000 per month.

e) Contribution toward travel expenses will be provided as stipulated in the WIPO Fellowship Policy. If necessary, WIPO may provide assistance in obtaining an entry visa to Switzerland.

f) WIPO provides medical and accident insurance coverage during the course of the fellowship. 

g) WIPO will request a “carte de légitimation” for the Fellow, which serves as a residence and work permit, from the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations Office and to the other international organizations in Geneva. Family members of the Fellow are not eligible for a “carte de legitimation.”

h) Tax and social security\: Fellows shall be solely responsible for meeting any taxation and social security obligations that may arise directly or indirectly from their contract with WIPO. 

5. Additional Information

Fellows are not staff members of WIPO and the position does not lead to any employment rights and entitlements beyond the terms of the fellowship.

6.  How Do I Apply?
