Introduction

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 162 Members (161 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 21 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

 

IRENA Planning and Programme Support office, located in the Office of the Director-General,  is responsible for internal coordination and the strategic integration of extra-budgetary resources in IRENA’s programmatic work; timely reporting on programmatic matters to governing bodies and individual donors; monitoring and evaluation of Agency work; strengthening IRENA’s presence in Europe,; and leading cross-cutting Agency initiatives, including energy transformation in the contexts of climate change and geopolitics, as required.

 

PPS leads IRENA’s external work on climate including in the context of UNFCCC’s Global Climate Action, the NDC Partnership and other collaborative efforts that promote the energy sector transformation through climate action. Under the supervision of the Director, Planning and Programme Support office, the Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for the following\:

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internal and external stakeholder engagement and communication in the context of climate change, including through Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action and NDC Partnership;
  • Conduct extensive research and analysis of climate change issues as it relates to energy;
  • Proactively search for and identify new links and opportunities – both internal and external – to achieve greater impact for the Agency in the climate change sector; 
  • Take a leading role in the preparation for and IRENA presence at climate events, such as COP, including the organizational aspects and follow-up actions as required;
  • Prepare analytical briefs, background notes, presentations, and other materials;
  • Attend meetings and other gatherings upon request; and
  • Support the work of other areas of PPS responsibility as required;

Qualifications

 

Education\: Advanced university degree in social science, international relations, political science or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience/Skills\: At least two years of progressively responsible working experience in a relevant energy and/or climate-related field, with experience at the international level desirable; knowledge of climate and COP setting and previous experience working in international organisations is an asset. 

Languages\: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other languages is an asset
