OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Within the framework of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme’s (IHP) eighth phase, and in particular Theme 2 “Groundwater in a Changing Environment” and Theme 4 “Water and Human Settlements of the Future”, the Division of Water Sciences, with its Section on Groundwater Systems and Settlements (SC/HYD/GSS), is implementing a series of activities and projects that require support from the communication and advocacy point of view. These include, among others, the organization of two major conferences and the contribution of UNESCO to the World Water Day 2022, which will have Groundwater as a theme.

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division Water Sciences (HYD), and the direct supervision of the Chief of Section on Groundwater Systems and Settlements (GSS), and in close cooperation with the Associate Programme Specialist in charge of communications, incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Design and implement a communications strategy for HYD/GSS section, which will cover the events listed above.
  • Design, in cooperation with the relevant UNESCO services, the visual identity for the activities implemented by the HYD/GSS section;
  • Contribute to increase visibility of the Section, enhance public recognition of its work, and maintain relevant stakeholders regularly informed;

  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of communication tools, including a periodic bulletin/newsletter, websites and social media (Twitter and Facebook);
  • Provide advice on communications and advocacy aspects for UNESCO-IHP participation to the preparations and execution of the World Water Day 2022, which will have Groundwater as a theme.

  • In order to maximize visibility of UNESCO-IHP prior and during the WWD2022, create a UNESCO-IHP page populated with all the Groundwater and ISARM related main success stories. Link this webpage with the WWAP /UNWATER web pages.
  • Periodically update the web pages of the GSS Section.

Education

  • Degree in communications, social science, economics, or related area.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience in science-related communication, with at least 1 year at the international level.
  • Experience of dealing with media;
  • Experience in conceptualizing and managing the production of printed materials with appropriate cultural sensitivity;
  • Experience with managing websites, preferably in the Drupal environment;
  • Experience in supporting the implementation of communication and/or media outreach plans
  • Experience in developing content that clearly communicates, to a culturally diverse audience, development ideas and experiences for media, web, print production, and audio-visual productions.
  • Competent with office software packages, including PowerPoint, excel, basic design software.

Skills and competencies

  • Capacity to work in a multi-cultural team while maintaining a high degree of autonomy and initiative;
  • Competence in the use of personal networked computers is essential and required as well as in-depth competence in data publishing platforms and dissemination channels;
  • Strong writing and oral skills for effective communication.

  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French and knowledge of the other language.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Master degree would be an asset
  • Specific training in science communication
  • Specific training in water sciences

Work Experience

  • Previous experience in a United Nations setting

Languages

  • Knowledge of another UN language

Monthly renumeration in € -  3271,00 (subject to charges) 

The remuneration paid to the service contract (SC) holder is not exempt from any income taxes which may be levied by the French tax authorities. The SC Holder is affiliated to the French social security scheme (Régime général de la sécurité sociale et des prestations familiales). Consequently, the employees’ social contributions to this scheme will be deducted from the gross remuneration paid by the Organization. UNESCO is not subject to the French unemployment scheme (UNEDIC – Pôle Emploi) and complementary retirement schemes (Retraite complémentaire Agirc/Arrco).
