OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The IARC Monographs (IMO) and IARC Handbooks (IHB) Groups are part of the research Section of Evidence Synthesis and Classification (ESC).

The aim of the newly created temporary position of Information Technician is to provide publishing support for the timely production of the following flagship publications led by IMO and IHB, for publication online and in print:

- The IARC Monographs on the Identification of Carcinogenic Hazards to Humans critically review and evaluate the published scientific evidence on carcinogenic hazards to which humans are exposed.

- The IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention critically review and evaluate the published scientific evidence on cancer-preventive measures that could be used in cancer control.

Note:

- This newly created temporary position is established for an initial duration of one (1) year, and on a part-time basis, i.e. 80% working time (meaning 32 hours per week). The exact schedule is negotiable.

- In light of the evolving Covid-19 situation, and subject to exigencies of service, this position can be carried out remotely, in part, from the selected candidate’s home in the Lyon area, under the force majeure teleworking provisions of IARC’s teleworking policy applicable at this time during the pandemic.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the guidance of supervisors, using existing templates and according to established publishing support procedures, the Information Technician will carry out the following key duties in a highly collaborative team setting:

1. Manage documents for volumes of the IARC Monographs and the IARC Handbooks, from the first draft to the final version for publication online and in print, according to their position in the workflow (before the meeting, after the meeting, checking, editing, or publication), using electronic publishing software and tools.

2. Enable the production of volumes of the IARC Monographs and the IARC Handbooks, according to their position in the workflow (before the meeting, after the meeting, checking, editing, or publication).

3. Maintain the IARC Monographs website and the IARC Handbooks website using specialized application software (Dreamweaver and WordPress).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential:

Graduation from secondary school or equivalent, and subsequent training in the field of specialization with possession of a diploma (DUT, BTS, or equivalent or higher) in field/s relevant to the position (e.g. publishing, information science, foreign languages, linguistics, communication, humanities)

Experience

Essential:

- At least two years of professional experience (including paid internships) in word processing of documents in the English language.

- Prior experience in the use of specialized desktop publishing packages.

Desirable:

- Experience in word processing of large documents, preferably scientific or technical in nature.

Skills

Essential:

- Good knowledge and competency in the following IT tools: MS Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), one or more desktop publishing software packages (e.g. InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop).

- Excellent administrative, organizational, and time-management skills.

- Effective communication skills and ability to work well as part of a multicultural team.

- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

- Ability to work to deadlines.

Desirable:

- Knowledge of XML-based publishing software (e.g. eXtyles).

Use of Language Skills

- Expert level of English is essential.

- Intermediate or higher level of French is desirable.

REMUNERATION

The fixed remuneration for the above position currently amounts (for 80% working time) to EUR2266 per month, and is expressed net of income tax but before deduction of the employee share contributions for mandatory participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and in the Organization’s private insurance plans covering health, accident, illness and disability. Net paid salary after deduction of these contributions amounts to approx. EUR1900 per month.

Other benefits include 6 weeks of annual leave and allowances for dependent family members.

Employment status is that of international civil servant.

Note: due to the legal status of WHO/IARC as an international organization, its staff do not contribute to and do not generate benefits in French mandatory schemes for health insurance (“assurance maladie”), pension (“assurance vieillesse/retraite or unemployment (“Pôle-Emploi”) throughout their period of employment with the Agency.
