OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Within the framework of the UNESCO’s Programme and Budget for 2020-2021 (40 C/5), Major Programme II: Natural Sciences – MLA 1, ER 3: a contractor is sought to research, assess and write up case studies of UNESCO projects in Pacific SIDS on social, ecological or socio-ecological resilience building.

 

The work is conducted under the overall authority of the Director of the Division of Science Policy and Capacity Building, the direct supervision of the Chief of Section for Small Islands and Indigenous Knowledge (SII) and in cooperation with the relevant Programme Specialists. The contractor will perform the following duties:

 

1. Work with the production team to conceptualise the approach to deliver a coherent publication on UNESCO contributions to SIDS social and environmental resilience, including completing background readings on national, regional, sub-regional, and global policy frameworks, UNESCO programming and reporting, and multidimensional vulnerability assessments in SIDS;
 

2. Identify best cases of resilience interventions in the Pacific SIDS by UNESCO. Solicit, analyse and edit the case study using the agreed lens of resilience characteristics and impact assessment. Bring text to publication quality for the UNESCO SIDS Resilience Report 2021, showing the resilience achievements of UNESCO’s actions in the Pacific and opportunities for further actions in the Region, in close consultation with the production team (Process Coordinator and the Editor-in-Chief), under the overall authority of UNESCO SC/PCB/SII.

3. Pacific case study chapter will examine the following:

 

  • Specific resilience achievements and intersectoral/transdisciplinary collaboration of UNESCO’s programmes in the Pacific. What factors created success, including examine post-intervention impacts;
  • An overview of UNESCO designated sites and associated conventions and programmes (including BRs, Geoparks, WH, Ramsar sites and multiple designation sites) in the Pacific;
  • A review of SIDS knowledge mobilization for social and environmental resilience in the Pacific – how have SIDS and UNESCO together addressed the mobilization of knowledges for resilience, especially in times of isolation and remoteness, relying on communication technologies and e-learning;
  • A summary of SIDS capacity development in the Pacific, showing how UNESCO and SIDS are working on educational and training opportunities to build resilient economies and societies. Focus on the environment, ecosystems, STI / STEM, MOST schools, ASP, ESD and Youth related mobilization.

4. The draft of the Pacific chapter will be around 3500. words and structured around the annotated table of contents of the UNESCO SIDS Resilience Report 2021. The author will contribute to the development of graphs and tables to help illustrate the relevant information.

5. Assist the SIDS Resilience Report 2021 Editor-in-chief for drafting and finalizing the introductory chapter of the SIDS Resilience Report 2021 and contribute to the overall analysis of the report.
 

6. Serve as a resource person for the overall content production of the SIDS Resilience Report 2021, review and edit content, as required.

Payment schedule:
