Background

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 161 Members (160 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 22 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.

IRENA, with its unique mandate and near-universal membership, is aiming to become a centre of excellence for global renewable energy information with an integrated approach to data and information management. The IRENA Statistics Unit contributes to this effort through the provision of reliable and timely renewable energy statistics, an essential component of informed energy planning and decision making.

Key activities of the Statistics Unit include the collection and analysis of data from countries using the IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics Questionnaire, desk research and other data sources such as industry associations. The unit is also engaged in data dissemination through avenues such as the IRENA REsource platform and forthcoming statistical publications, the development and dissemination of methodological guidance on renewable energy statistics and capacity building in statistics through workshops, seminars and daily communications with data providers and other stakeholders.
