Background

The Strategic Plan 2018-2021 – and more broadly supporting the achievement of the 2030 Agenda – requires making UNDP a more nimble, innovative, and enterprising organization, grounded in a business model that ensures efficient, scalable and cost-effective delivery of services.  

The Strategy and Planning (S&P) Surge Team in the Executive Office supports the UNDP Administrator and senior leadership in the delivery of the Strategic Plan through three core functions: (i) Strategy Development and Planning, (ii) UNDP corporate transformations, & (iii) Purpose-led Innovation initiatives.  These functions support the development and implementation of UNDP’s Strategic Plan and associated strategic repositioning of the organization. As part of this mandate, the Strategy and Planning Surge Team is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the development of the 2022-2025 UNDP Strategic Plan, including its rollout and the implementation. This work will begin in July 2020 building on the lessons learned from the midterm review of the strategic plan.  

The Strategy & Planning Senior Writer will work with the Strategy and Planning Surge Team in the design and drafting of the 2022-2025 UNDP Strategic Plan.  S/he will be primarily responsible for producing the text of the Strategic Plan, reflecting the issues, ideas and inputs provided with accuracy, clarity and substantive vision. As part of this function, the Strategy & Planning Analyst works closely with the other members of the Strategy and Planning team, and interacts with UNDP leadership including the Administrator and Associate Administrator as well as with senior managers of relevant UNDP Bureaus and Offices. 

Duties and Responsibilities

1.Works with the Strategy and Planning Team in the formulation of the 2022-2025 UNDP Strategic Plan. Primarily responsible for the drafting of the Strategic Plan text and related materials, in close collaboration with the rest of the Strategy and Planning team. Primarily responsible for all internal communication on the strategic plan process. Produces clear and accurate messaging on the Strategic Plan process and outputs by analyzing and synthesizing relevant materials. 
2.Develops written content on frontier issues, such as the Future of Development series and COVID-19 response, by finding, analyzing and synthesizing data, reports and other relevant materials. This includes leading the preparation of background information for and summaries and synthesis of high level convenings by the Administrator, and preparing substantive and impactful internal and external communications. 
3.Supports the Executive Office with key corporate communication products, including speech writing, editorials, presentations, etc., in collaboration with the ExO Strategic Engagement Advisor and Speechwriter.
4.Facilitates knowledge sharing and knowledge management of Strategy and Planning Team’s work.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Masters in Communication or related field and 7 years’ experience OR Bachelor degree in Communications or related field and 9 years’ experience 
Experience:
  • At least 7 years of experience working on international development issues. 
  • Proven record as author or editor of major international publications or reports. 
  • Experience within in the UN system, and preferably also UNDP. 
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to synthesize findings from diverse materials and sources. 
  • Experience in producing and analysing best practice, lessons learned and think-pieces and other knowledge products.
  • Have a good grasp of substantive and policy issues related to sustainable development.
  • Very good writing skills and ability to produce written materials.
Language Requirements:
  • Excellent writing skills and command of the English language. 
  • Experience in other UN languages would be an asset.
