Background Information - Job-specific

UNOPS SSOC will be implementing the South Sudan Safety Net Project (SSSNP), which is funded by the World Bank (WB) to address existing challenges of soaring levels of poverty, vulnerability, unemployment and idleness, particularly amongst youth. The project development objective is to provide access to income opportunities and temporary employment to the poor and vulnerable households and strengthen safety nets delivery systems.

SSSNP has three main components namely: 

a.   Public works plus including complementary activities like entrepreneurial skills, WASH trainings and early childhood development and nutrition messaging;

b.  Direct income support targeting households who are labour constrained

c.  Strengthening safety net delivery systems 

The project will be targeting the most vulnerable segments of South Sudanese population aiming to be benefit in excess of 65,000 beneficiary households in more than 10 vulnerable locations across the country.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Project Management Support Officer, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to field team and visitors, ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The  Driver has a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Functional Responsibilities

Key Functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services - Provides reliable and secure driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the field team b) collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items

  • Proper use of vehicle - Ensures proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

  • Day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of the assigned vehicle - Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tries, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle is kept clean.

  • Availability of documents/ supplies - Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts.

  • Immediate action in case of accident - Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident.

Education

  • Completion of secondary school or high school diploma
Certification
  • Valid driver's license

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ work experience as a driver is required
  • Skills in vehicle maintenance/minor vehicle repairs, required 
  • Experience working with NGO and or UN is an added advantage
  • A valid driver's licence is required

Languages

  • Fluency in written and oral English required;
  • Knowledge of Arabic language desired.
