Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

The UN Volunteer will focus on the following:

  1. A mapping of interaction between civil society and the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies: this will help identify entry points where preventive measures can be taken, key actors can be supported and connected, where follow-up is needed, and where negative impacts can be mitigated.
  1. Development of user-friendly guides on specific issues related to the Security Council agenda: these will be developed as a reference tool for UN headquarters and field staff and other peace and security actors to help them be more alert to and take measures to prevent and address reprisals. The focus would be on ensuring a safe and enabling space for civil society partners participation at the UN, in particular women peacebuilders’, paying attention to the particular risks as well as acts of intimidation and reprisals that have a gender dimension (see A/HRC/42/30, para. 27, 91) as well as key issues raised at the Security Council under the WPS. The final products can also provide guidance to other UN bodies and fora.
  1. Development and execution of a training module and sessions for UN staff adapted to the work of the Security Council and for use in countries on the Security Council agenda; these will be developed and used to raise awareness on intimidation and reprisals and encourage the use of the guides (including an on-line module). The UN Volunteer will also organize and facilitate training sessions.
  1. Following the organization of the February 2020 Arria Formula meeting on reprisals involving the Security Council, further consideration to implementing recommendations in consultation with UN, Member States and civil society partners will be envisioned (to be further discussed with those involved).
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

The candidate should have an advanced degree or equivalent in international human rights, international law, international relations.

Gender-related and training-related studies are a strong advantage.

Required experience: 36 Months Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
Area of expertise: Human rights, Gender equality and the advancement of women, Other educational, teaching or training experience Area of expertise details:

The candidate should have knowledge of international peace and security and of the Security Council and its mechanisms.

Experience engaging with civil society on human rights/peace and security issues and developing/conducting training in the United Nations context are advantages.

Very good understanding of gender and human rights / peacebuilding issues, and knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.

Experience with protection-related policies (retaliation, wistleblower policies, witness protection, etc.) is an asset.

Experience in designing and delivering technical, human rights-related trainings, both online and in-person.

Outstanding analytical and drafting skills are required.
