Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Medical doctor will:

Responsibilities

Within the limits of delegated authority, the Medical officer will be responsible for performing the following duties: Clinical Duties:

1) Attend the United Nations Clinic on a full-time basis

2) Respond to acute emergencies in line with international protocols such as advance cardiovascular life support and advanced trauma life support management or Pre-Hospital Trauma life support

3) Be able to do triage and primary stabilization

4) Undertake day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, pre-placement and periodic medical examinations and immunizations;

5) Provide health education;

6) Participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues

7) Undertake medical examinations for UN personnel.

8) Diagnose and recommend treatment to all staff visiting the Clinic daily.

9) Be on call during and outside office hours to observe and treat emergencies in the UN Clinic. Undertake house calls when required

10) Responsible for entry and periodic medical examinations for United Nations staff members who choose to use the UN Clinic for their examinations;

11) To make follow up on chronic and provide relatively accurate medical advisory. Medico Administrative Duties:

1. Promote proactive occupational health policies and best practices and procedures in the medical services in conjunction with Administration. This will include outreach to staff and dependents in the areas of preventative health.

2. Ensure that appropriate medical records are kept in a strictly confidential manner in hard copies or mediate software

3. Being part of the emergency response team and will as such work closely with partner departments in implementing casevac and mass casualty response.

4. Liaise with other dispensaries, host-nation medical facilities, and medical facilities abroad to coordinate medical evacuations.

5. Follow the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave, and medical evacuations. 6.Recommend medical evacuation when required to(the doctor recommends as the medical expert, submit evacuation request to UN medical Director for authorization, and facilitate medical evacuations of UN staff ). Responsible for all paperwork and reporting procedures for medical evacuations in line with UN rules and procedures.

7. Ensure proper follow up on all cases

8. Responsible for establishing good relations with reliable hospitals, private medical facilities, and blood banks and local physicians.

9. Keep constant contact with the United Nations Designated Examining Physicians to facilitate their availability as and when required;

10. Ensure that proper medical records are kept in Earthmen, in a strictly confidential manner.

11. Maintain emergency medical supplies and equipment to be used in case of emergency;

12. Replenish first aid kits and other essential medical supplies kept in other duty stations within the country

13.Recommend procurement of vaccines, medical supplies, and equipment, and ensure that inventory is kept.

14. Maintain medical records of all United Nations personnel and advise health precautionary steps to new staff members; already include above 15. Prepare and send periodic (quarterly) reports of functions, visits, medical evacuations, and treatments at the UN Clinic to Medical Officer; included below.

16. Advise on health precautionary steps to be undertaken at the duty station, and perform any other duties as considered necessary by the United Nations medical Director. Supervisory Administration:

1. Supervise, distribute work to the nurse (s) and other staff of the United Nations Clinic;

2. Manage day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring the availability of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment; 3.Ensure that appropriate training programs are implemented to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid, and CPR).

4. Responsible for regular reporting on the UN Clinic activities, medical facilities available locally, and other statistical information as may be required. General: •Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Master's degree, minimum five years of clinical experience in clinical medicine and emergency response.

Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:

Medical Doctor, with minimum 5 years of clinical experience is required. BLS, ACLS and ATLS or prehospital trauma management certificates are also required, Previous UN medical system/international medical experience is desirable.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Area of expertise: General human medicine (with clinical experience) Area of expertise details:

Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is required.
