Background Information - UNOPS

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners; peace-building, humanitarian and development projects around the world. Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors and United Nations organizations.

In order to enhance the impact of project implementation, UNOPS is currently developing new innovative solutions to help its partners achieve the Agenda 2030. Therefore, UNOPS has started creating a global system of innovation centers. Currently three innovation centers are already up and running in Sweden, Japan and in Antigua, and more centers are going to be opened. 

This position will be located in the Global Innovation Centre in Sweden. Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Innovation Centre Manager, and in close coordination with the local team and stakeholders, the intern will be an integral part of the team driving concrete responsibility areas. The intern will learn and practice skills related to communications and event management.

Functional Responsibilities

Communications (70%)

  • Help draft engaging and crisp material to use in GIC Sweden communication such as updates to stakeholders and steering group, invitations to events, presentation materials, joint communication with partners, etc.

  • Actively participate in content creation and moderation of social media channels owned by UNOPS Innovation, covering all GICs.

  • Support external communications by helping with incoming requests from various stakeholders, under the guidance of a supervisor. 

Event Management (15%)

  • Participate in event planning and delivery together with the GIC Sweden team as well as partners such as Ideon Science Park.

  • Set up and help manage a calendar of events in the GIC Sweden Incubator and relevant events in the Swedish innovation ecosystem.

  • Undertake continuous research on events happening in the region and nation to ensure we are plugged into relevant activity.

Facility Management (10%)

  • Maintain the day-to-day aspect of GIC Sweden office space, making sure we have an inspiring and updated environment.

  • Propose and help drive development of the office space to create a truly innovative centre.

Coordination and efficiency 5%

  • Learn about stakeholder management and leadership by participating in relevant meetings with the GIC Manager, responsible for taking notes and following up on relevant actions.

  • Support GIC Manager and the GIC team with overall meeting coordination and efficiency.


Training components and learning elements

UNOPS highly values interns' contribution and appreciates the importance of learning during an internship. UNOPS encourages the intern to raise specific wishes regarding learning opportunities before and during the internship.

The intern will have access to a large offering of online training on the comprehensive UNOPS intranet and opportunities to communicate with UNOPS HQ, Regional Office, and other country offices.


Education/Experience/Language requirements

1. Academic qualifications 

All applicants must be enrolled in a university programme such as Bachelor, Masters or PhD. (or the equivalent) or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the application date of the internship.
The preferred education is in the area of communication, journalism, graphic design, mass media, digital communication, public relations and other related studies.

2. Language Skills

Fluency in written and spoken English  is required.

Swedish is desired but not required.

3. Computer Literacy

Computer/tech savvy is desired.

Video editing skills are desired.

4. Internship-related experiences

Communications experience from the public sector and/or large multinational companies is desired.

Experience from the Swedish innovation ecosystem is a plus.

Social media knowledge is desired.

Messaging and story-telling to different audiences (formal/informal etc.) is desired.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions.
