For the last six years, UN University has worked on a variety of policy issues around the fight against modern slavery, notably: data, with the creation of Delta 8.7, the Alliance 8.7 Knowledge Platform; international law and international criminal justice; and the financial sector with the creation of the Liechtenstein Initiative for a Financial Sector Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. UN University’s thought leadership in this field has led it to become a centre of excellence for policy-relevant research questions related to anti-slavery and anti-trafficking efforts.

As part of the Liechtenstein Initiative’s Finance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAST), the Survivor Inclusion Initiative works with banks and survivor support organisations to provide survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking with access to safe and reliable basic financial services. UNU-CPR serves as the Secretariat to FAST.

Position overview

The Survivor Consultant will provide a specified set of inputs to the Finance Against Slavery & Trafficking Secretariat over a duration of 6-months:

  1. Three 800-word, first-person ‘viewpoint’ pieces for inclusion on the Survivor Inclusion Initiative webpage: addressing survivor needs and remedy within the banking sector, thinking beyond basic banking to integrate credit repair services for survivors, and the importance of financial literacy training for survivors.
  2. Support to the Secretariat’s production of one, short (5-10 minute) introductory video pertaining to the Survivor Inclusion Initiative, including an optional appearance in a video if appropriate.
  3. Support to the filming of one, 30-60-minute training webinar for the banking sector titled, Working with Survivors: success stories and lessons learned, including an optional appearance in a video if appropriate.
  4. Participation in up to 60 hours of outreach and engagement calls over six months with project partners and affiliates (including participating banks and survivor support organisations).

Required qualifications and experience

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • first-hand expertise on the lived experience of human trafficking or modern slavery
  • prior knowledge of issues related to modern slavery and survivor advocacy
  • good English-language oral and written communication skills
  • ability to work independently and report work activities in a timely and proactive manner
  • solid interpersonal and problem-solving skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender parity

Remuneration

The consultant will receive a total salary of 8,000 USD for the completion of duties assigned.

Duration of contract

The 6-month contract shall commence from the date of appointment and may be eligible for renewal. The successful candidate will not hold international civil servant status nor be a “staff member” as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations.
