Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Office, and the direct supervision of the Unit’s coordinator, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Gather information and report on the human rights situation in a designated geographical or thematic area, including through contacts with other United Nations actors, state authorities and the community;
  • Contribute to analysis and reports on human rights concerns, violations and abuses, and the consistency of policies, programmes and norms with international human rights standards on migration and forced displacement;
  • Assist in the designing and the delivering of technical assistance and capacity building to government institutions and civil society with focus on non-discrimination and migration and forced displacement;
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a strategy to improve the protection of migrants, returnees and internally displaced persons and provide technical assistance to state institutions, parliament, communities and other stakeholders, in the development, reform and implementation of legislation, policies and programs;
  • Undertake monitoring missions and reporting, use the OHCHR database to enter cases and document allegations and violations of human rights violations;
  • Perform other related duties as required;
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced University degree, preferably in law, political science, international relations or other disciplines related to human rights. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:

At least 3 years of combined professional experience at national and international levels, in the field of human rights and protection.

Language skills:

Area of expertise: Human rights, International law, Other rule of law or governance related experience Area of expertise details:

Good knowledge of a range of human rights issues and mechanisms. Good communication, reporting and advocacy skills. Good analytical and research skills, including ability to evaluate and integrate information from a variety of sources and assess impact on the human rights situation in assigned country. Ability to transfer knowledge and skills. Ability to take own initiatives but also to work as part of a team in an international or multicultural environment. Knowledge of technology and use of office computer applications, including working with databases, Familiarity with the political, social and security environment of Honduras, as they pertain to human rights issues.
