Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Clinical Duties:

  • Examine, diagnose, and treat deformities related to injuries such as road traffic accidents, repair injuries, improve function and prevent complications;
  • Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews;
  • Examine patients and determine laboratory and x-ray examinations;
  • Interpret test results and evaluate examination findings;
  • Determine the necessity of surgical operation, estimate possible risks to the patient and recommend the appropriate surgical procedure;
  • Monitor medical instruments and equipment to ensure that aseptic and antiseptic methods are adhered to;
  • Perform major and minor surgeries using appropriate instruments and established surgical techniques for the indicated procedure;
  • Advise on kind and quantity of supplies and equipment;
  • Coordinate surgery services with other medical activities;
  • Refer staff to outside specialists as necessary;
  • Follow-up with outside specialists;
  • Provide health education.

Medical Administrative Duties:

  • Follow the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations.

Administration:

  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer to ensure availability of supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment;
  • Ensure appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, first aid and CPR);
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:

  • Advanced university degree in Surgery.
  • Specialty recognition in General Surgery.
Required experience: 60 Months Experience remark:

5 -7 years of progressively responsible practical experience in general surgery after specialty training.

Language skills:
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
Area of expertise: Specialized human medicine (with clinical experience) Area of expertise details:
  • Computer skills: Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word); other IT applications and office technology equipment;
  • Affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
