UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an internship position within the Social Media section in our headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
UNHCR is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. We are in over 125 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. This position is based out of UNHCR headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and sits within the Global Social Media Unit, as part of the Global Communications Service, reporting directly to the Head of Social Media. The Global Social Media Unit manages UNHCR¿s global social media accounts, and provides strategic and operational support to UNHCR¿s leadership and national and regional accounts worldwide. UNHCR¿s Social Media team sits primarily in Geneva, but works seamlessly across several major timezones. The Social Media team is responsible for promoting and generating public interest in the whole of UNHCR¿s work with an emphasis on storytelling to generate help for, restore and maintain hope for, and eventually facilitate the return home of refugees, others who have been forcibly displaced, and stateless people worldwide.This role focuses on day-to-day support, content production and management of both leadership and global English accounts.

Accountability:
¿ Gain unique knowledge about UNHCR¿s global role, capabilities, programs, and impact, and the role of communications and outreach in achieving UNHCR¿s mandate.
¿ Support Social Media team with outreach, including media relations, digital media, multi-media projects, events, exhibits and campaigns to ensure public support for refugees and UNHCR.
Responsibilities:
¿ Assist in the creation of original content (messages and/or multimedia) for social media; platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok
¿ Support key social media projects, including preparations for World Refugee Day, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and other major events happening in the refugee space.
¿ Support planning and roll out of key public-facing social products and prepare post-event documents;
¿ Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of social media content, often under tight deadlines;
¿ Assist with social media planning and scheduling using tools like Trello, Social Flow, and native social platform publishing tools;
¿ Monitor and analyze statistics related to social media content;
¿ Gather social media content at special events;
¿ Assist on all Social Media team projects as needed.
Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required:
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
¿ Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
¿ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible.
Desirable qualifications and skills:
¿ Possess an understanding of social media platforms and the overall landscape of social media (ie Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn)
¿ Experience writing for social media audience
¿ Demonstrated commitment or strong interest in international relations, refugee issues, and humanitarian response;
¿ Superior command of the English language with excellent written and oral communication skills;
¿ Possess good ¿social instincts¿ of what online audiences respond positively to;
¿ Proficiency in PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel; social media and graphic design.
¿ Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing
¿ Required languages: English essential; any other language is an asset
¿ Interest in the humanitarian cause

The successful candidate will be based with the team at the UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Conditions & Allowances:
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
