Post
Young Graduate Trainee for Delay Tolerant Networking
This post is classified F1.
Location
ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany
The Back-end Software Section is responsible for the management, supervision and coordination of the development and engineering activities related to ground station back-end software for ESA and 3rd-party projects within the ESA matrix structure. It is responsible for the management, development and maintenance of all software applications belonging to the back-end of ESTRACK stations, including future radar and optical ground stations, and for applications belonging to the ESTRACK network management domain.
Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int
Space communication is often characterised by long roundtrip delays and less reliable communication links, typically planned a long time in advance and which may be only available for limited time. Data rates on individual links may vary between a few kBit/sec to GBit/sec and there may be no end-to-end paths between two communication entities.
To overcome these challenges, Delay or Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) communication architectures have been proposed and related communication protocols standardised for the space domain. These protocols are currently being implemented by ESA, simulated and validated for various scenarios, including Earth observation and lunar or Mars exploration scenarios. During the traineeship, you will support the following tasks:
- acceptance testing and validation of protocol implementations received from industry
- supporting the deployment of prototypic operational systems on the ground to prepare DTN communication experiments and demonstrations
- performing DTN communication experiments (simulations) and demonstrations with OPS-SAT, an ESA CubeSat for demonstrating new techniques in mission control and on-board systems
- depending on your interests, further work could be performed in areas currently under active development and standardisation, such as network management for DTN networks, routing or mission operations for DTN-enabled spacecraft
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of a university course at Master's level (or equivalent) in a technical or scientific discipline. In particular in computer science or a related discipline
You should have some knowledge in software engineering and have good computer programming skills, preferably in Java. A background in communication protocols is desirable.
The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
You should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
During the interview your motivation and overall professional perspective/career goals will also be explored.
