Field(s) of activity

Space communication is often characterised by long roundtrip delays and less reliable communication links, typically planned a long time in advance and which may be only available for limited time. Data rates on individual links may vary between a few kBit/sec to GBit/sec and there may be no end-to-end paths between two communication entities.

To overcome these challenges, Delay or Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) communication architectures have been proposed and related communication protocols standardised for the space domain. These protocols are currently being implemented by ESA, simulated and validated for various scenarios, including Earth observation and lunar or Mars exploration scenarios. During the traineeship, you will support the following tasks:

  • acceptance testing and validation of protocol implementations received from industry
  • supporting the deployment of prototypic operational systems on the ground to prepare DTN communication experiments and demonstrations
  • performing DTN communication experiments (simulations) and demonstrations with OPS-SAT, an ESA CubeSat for demonstrating  new techniques in mission control and on-board systems
  • depending on your interests, further work could be performed in areas currently under active development and standardisation, such as network management for DTN networks, routing or mission operations for DTN-enabled spacecraft
