Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global anti-poverty network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in over 170 countries and territories, working with them on their own solutions to global, regional and national development challenges.

The Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) in New York, which leads UNDP’s work across the Arab Region, is seeking an intern with an interest in addressing global issues such as climate change, poverty and gender inequality in collaboration with various partners. Finding solutions to those issues is a vital element in attaining SDGs while preventing conflicts and pursing stabilities in the region.  RBAS has been engaging in the promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in the Arab States region together with the UNDP Global Policy Network (GPN), which is in charge of UNDP’s corporate responsibility for developing all relevant policies and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan.

To this end, the intern will be part of the RBAS Partnership Unit and working, in coordination with all relevant units in the Bureau, in analyzing and visualizing data. This exercise will help RBAS strategize and plan development approaches in supporting more vulnerable populations as well as achieving the 2030 Agenda.

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is intended to facilitate the following knowledge/learning: 

  • Means of analyzing development data;
  • Ways to better visualize development data.

  • Support the collection of data and its analysis and visualization;   
  • Support the preparation of reports and infographics;
  • Other related tasks.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • An interest in addressing global challenges that the Arab Region is facing;
  • Creative, out-of-the-box thinking;

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) such as statistics, mathematics, economics and other relevant areas;
  • Or be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) such as statistics, mathematics, economics and other relevant areas;
  • Or have graduated with a university degree such as statistics, mathematics, economics and other relevant areas, if selected, must start with the internship within one-year of graduation

Experience:

  • Experience in analyzing and aggregating data
  • Experience in editing images or preparing graphics for the web a plus.
  • Experience in finance related work/ activities
  • Familiarity with UNDP’ or UN’s work on partnerships is desirable

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English-- written and spoken-- is required. Proficiency in French or Arabic an asset.
