ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

Governments, employers' associations and trade unions around the world are working to improve the employability of workers, move young people into productive and decent work, and increase the productivity of enterprises through better quality and relevant training. The Skills and Employability Branch conducts comparative research and provides policy guidelines and technical assistance to help constituents integrate skills development into national and sector development strategies.

The ILO's work with constituents focuses primarily on areas: linking training to current labour market needs as well as anticipating and building competencies for the jobs of the future; building quality apprenticeship systems and incorporating core skills into training for young people; and expanding access to employment-related training in rural communities in order to improve livelihoods, reduce poverty, and equip women and men to work in the formal economy.

Learning area

As an intern in the Skills and Employability Branch, you will be exposed to the work of ILO specialists in areas such as skills development policies, work-based learning, especially quality apprenticeships as well as recognition of non-formal and informal learning. The specific objectives of this internship are to support the work of the specialists on Work based learning, especially quality apprenticeships and skills recognition and by doing so learn about this important component of school-to-work transition systems; and to strengthen personal core skills such as professional communication and team work. As an intern, you will be expected to assist specialist with a wide range of tasks by doing literature review, gathering information, monitoring programmes, drafting reports and organizing workshops. The interns will have the opportunity to work and learn on the most contemporary issues related to skills development and innovative solutions. The intern will also be able to work and learn in developing new communication products using modern technology.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required qualifications
Education

An advanced degree in Social Sciences.The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Experience

Relevant work experience and knowledge in the field of vocational education and training, especially apprenticeship would be an advantage. Experiences in research, writing papers and communication using modern technology also constitutes an advantage

Languages

Fluency (both oral and written) in English. Excellent drafting skills in English is also required. Working knowledge of another ILO official language (French or Spanish) would be an advantage.

Competencies

Being adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and an ability to work in a team.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
